President Obama Orders National Guard Soldiers to Arizona-Mexico Border
A Barbed Wire Fence Along the US-Mexico Border Has Failed, Will US Troops Be Effective?
Although, the number of troops being deployed to the Arizona-Mexican border may not be sufficient it is certainly a step in the right direction to increasing security. The troops will assist Border Patrol agents while Customs and Border Protection recruit and train more officers and agents. Most of the 20,000 plus Border Patrol agents are along the nation's southern border, yet their efforts at blocking drug trafficking, weapons and illegal trafficking of people has failed. In addition, currently there are 344 U.S. National Guard troops along the border.
Did Gov. Jan Brewer's signing of the new Arizona law push President Obama to act immediately? Was it really Brewer's signing of Arizona Immigratin Law SB 1070 or the National Outrage that followed? A bigger concern, will 1,200 troops be sufficient, well Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona called for 4,800 more National Guard troops to be deployed to the border. With all due respect to President Obama's decision, many a people may agree that 1,200 soldiers is not enough to secure a border that is almost 2,000 miles long.
However, US troops will give much needed support to Border Patrol, how effective it will be in controlling immigrants from entering the US illegally, minimizing the smuggling of humans and illegal drugs, and stopping the violence at the borders is questionable. What is important is that it is a start, regardless of what influenced President Obama to act our Commander and Chief has not turned a blind-eye or a deaf-ear.
This is a beginning, there are no reports saying that the President will not add to the number of National Guard soldiers being deployed to the borders.
Interestingly, there are some folks who disagree with sending troops to help secure our border because they fear that this might be a sign that the US is heading in the direction of militarizing the border. However, there are many Americans, the author of this article included, who believe sending our US troops to protect and secure the US border is far better than laws such as Arizona's SB 1070 which could easily be abused and lead to racial profiling and strip US citizens of their Constitutional rights.
We have troops stationed world-wide serving and dying in other countries, our troops fight for the right's of others and protect their lands and that is commendable; President Obama has ordered US troops to protect and secure our US border. In the author's opinion, that does not seem like militarizing the border rather having our soldiers securing and protecting our country at a time of desperate need.

Post a CommentImmigration is not the problem. Drugs are. Hoping this is a beginning of control.
A large, sealed glass bubble might do the trick- problem is, it would not only keep others out, but us in as well. Walls stop traffic in both directions.
