President Obama was repudiated in the midterm election of November, 2010. The election was viewed as a referendum on his first two years in office, and the results were devastating as the Democratic Party was decimated. As a matter of fact it was the worst midterm performance in US History.
Will Obama Change Course?
That is the million dollar question. Based on his News Conference today, he seems much more willing to compromise. The President said he reached out to the winners and losers in yesterday's election. Some elections are great and some are miserable, and this was clearly the latter.
Elections remind us that the real power rests with the people and not the government. People want more jobs and higher wages so they can survive and pay their bills. People want to know that their tax dollars are spent wisely and that their voices are heard and not drowned out by the lobbyists and special interests. No one party has all the wisdom and no one party can dictate where we go from here. The president wants to sit down with Republicans and find common ground even though he realizes it won't be easy.
The American People want the government to focus on issues that effect their lives and livelihood. Our biggest competition is with our economic competitors and not each other. The answers will not be found exclusively in any one political party or philosophy. With so much at stake the American People want progress and we must build consensus. We need civility in our discourse and debate. President Obama believes the United States has overcome problems that are much worse than this one. Progress has always come as our first allegiance is always to America and not political parties.
