President Obama Signs James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act

Janet Hunt
On January 2, 2011, President Obama signed The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which guarantees medical treatment and compensation for the 9/11 first responders.

The bill is inspired by former Detective James Zadroga, Badge Number 6663, of the New York City Police Department who died on January 6, 2006 of a respiratory disease directly related to his rescue efforts at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. Detective Zadroga was inside 7 World Trade Center during its collapse, but escaped successfully. Following his rescue work at Ground Zero, James Zadroga developed severe chronic cough, headaches, and shortness of breath, among other symptoms. His condition deteriorated quickly and he received 75% disability pension on November 1, 2004. He suffered from mercury on the brain and black lung disease.

The contamination and air pollution at the World Trade Center has made many of the first responders very ill, and many have died. The legislation to care for the workers who so selflessly sacrificed their own well-being has been a long time coming. The bill establishes the World Trade Center Health Program responsible for monitoring the workers affected by the 9/11 Ground Zero health issues, offering initial health evaluations and treatment. Sec. 3332. Subtitle C, authorizes research into conditions related to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Title II of the bill establishes a victim compensation fund.

It is high time we treated the wounds of these heroes who gave so much to so many. Many gave their lives. Compensation to families will not make up for the loss of their loved ones, but may help the families begin rebuilding their lives.

..what the GOP detractors are also forgetting is that Obama's party DID NOT need the GOP..does anyone recall the healthcare bill rammed down our throats?? Why not the zadroga bill?? Democrats would have been able to pass the bill if they used the normal procedure, but they brought it up as a "suspension bill" and did not want to PROPERLY fund the bill..

I wrote about Det Zadroga during my early days here..he was a colleague and sadly demonized by Mayor Bloomberg..all in an effort to prevent his family from possibly opening the crime victims comp plan. Remember BEFORE the election Obama was also against the bill..for different reason than his fiscally responsible counterparts...what the GOP detractors have correct is..it is disgusting to play politics on the backs of first responders.
