President Obama Supports the Spread of Democracy

Urges US to Play a Leadership Role

Mathew Paul
President Obama in Europe

In Warsaw Poland, President Obama expressed his support for the spread of democracy in the Middle East and around the world. The president would like to support the development of democracy with economic assistance, but with the Great Recess on hitting America hard, the economic aid may be limited.

His four-country, six-day trip was intended to demonstrate the appeal of self government. He celebrated the time-tested freedom in England, pledged that the United States and its allies will help the developing democracies in North Africa, and asserted that the US stands with Poland and realizes that the overthrow of Soviet oppression is a beacon to the world. The president said that the United States must continue our tradition of providing leadership in the areas of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Libya

Libya is one country where the US must play a major role in developing democracy. The civil war has become a stalemate, and the opposition must demonstrate that they have the political and military power to govern the country without foreign armies of occupation. The best way they can do this is to demonstrated that they are real reformers who are offering their country a real democracy with guaranteed rights.
