On September 2009, I had an opportunity to hear President Obama's speech on Health care Reform. He gave an awesome speech and went into great detail of what the Health Care Reform would do for all Americans.
One of the main things that I really love about President Obama's Health Care Reform is that insurance company will no longer be able to discriminate against potential customers with pre-existent illnesses. My son has Cerebral Palsy and I would hate for my son to be discriminated against because of his disability. This new reform will finally make it illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against people with any illnesses.
In his historic speech, President Obama also states t that "Person should not go broke just because they are sick." This statement along really moved me because my family has lost everything when coping with extreme high medical cost of having a child with special needs.
Presently there are very few programs available for middle class families. The programs that are available are only for the extremely poor or the wealthy. Often time's middle class families have to lose everything before financial resources are made available to them. In the mean time, the middle class family are under financial stress by losing their homes, their jobs, their life savings, facing messed up credit, and even having to file bankruptcy. This is not fair and should be changed.
In 2006, my son Justin and I became ill. My son was later diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and I had to quite my job. My husband had to become the bread winner in the house and our incomes were split in half. This put a financial strain in our household. I later recovered but my son's condition will last him for a life time. The cost of doctor bills and medicines literally burned a hole in our pockets. We were spending roughly $400 extra for doctor visits and prescription medicines that the insurance would not cover. My 2 year old son, Justin had major four surgeries since the day he was born. The cost we have incurred and owed over the last couple of years in medical expense for Justin's surgeries is over $100,000. We incurred these cost prior to receiving Medicaid.
At first we could not get Medicaid and social security for Justin, because our income was too high. It took us losing everything such as our house, our cars, and our life savings to finally receive these benefits. It was too little too late. The government programs should have more special programs for the middle class families as well; especially since they are the ones that have the burden of paying more in taxes. This special program should help middle class families who have who have to cope with extreme medical costs that put them at risk of losing everything.
I believe that President Obama's Public Option for Health Care Reform is a step in the right direction. Isn't it time to save money by improving our health care system, through preventive medicine instead of cheap patch up work being done by doctors and insurance companies? Too often insurance companies are cheap and do patch up work in the health industry. For the sake of saving money, insurance companies do not do what is best for the patient. This reform will improve the quality of health, saving lives, and save this country some money. This plan is a brilliant idea and will be positive change for all Americans.
