Presidential Election 2008 - Will the Lead Candidate Please Step Forward?

Debra Elwick
We are less than one year from the presidential primaries and neither political party has a clear leader. Democrats could choose from New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama or former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and the Republicans could choose from Arizona Sen. John McCain or former New York City mayor Rudy Guiliani, but no one stands out among the crowd of presidential hopefuls.

What is this country looking for in our next president? Our list of needs is very long and there doesn't seem to be anyone who can fill them. Most importantly, we need to have a plan for Iraq. Then, we need to deal with Osama bin Laden and the war on terror. Illegal immigration is also very high on the list. Let's not forget the many social ills plaguing us today. Consumer debt, homelessness and poverty affect all of us in some way. Is there someone who will be able to unite the country and work towards solving these very complex and disturbing problems?

We need a man or woman in office with the ability to develop a military strategy to help stabilize Iraq and bring our troops home. This person should also be diplomatic enough to deal with the various political entities involved. The Iraq government will have to be able to control the country without our assistance. This should be an attainable goal, provided the Iraqi people can settle their disputes. The United States of America cannot force them to cooperate. They will have to choose to do so. This is a very complicated situation and there will be no simple answer. Is there someone capable of doing this?

Somewhere in the world, Osama bin Laden is probably alive and well, free to make his plans to wreak havoc on unsuspecting countries. He is a danger to everyone in the free world. We should have eyes and ears everywhere. This man should have been captured a long time ago. Is there anyone who has the courage to find him and prevent future acts of terror?

We have a country filled with people who are here illegally. This is another very serious and complex problem. There is no simple answer and perhaps there isn't even a correct one. Most of those that are here are trying to make a better life for themselves. Some, of course, are causing problems. We can't just put each person into one category. Each situation is different. Some of these people need to be returned to their country. They are not being a profitable part of our society. We can't let everyone stay, but we can't just kick them all out either. There has to be a middle ground that will take into account many different factors. Who can determine a fair and accurate solution?

As a country, we have plunged deeper into debt. We have homeless families, vets living on the street and poverty stricken neighborhoods that have lost hope. They can only do so much. A big brother style government is obviously not the answer, but there has to be some way to help these people. It will not be easy to come up with an answer to our society's ills. Is there a candidate that could pave the way for a smaller bureaucracy that provides more help to those who need it?

Do we have a chance of electing the right person to be the president of our country? Is there a right person? There are many issues that will need to be dealt with and no clear answer to any of them. We need a person who has our best interests at heart. Those that are being bought by big business are not the answer. They will be concerned about their sponsors interests. Is their someone we can trust to tackle the dilemmas our country faces? Would the candidate who can unite our country and begin to solves the many problems we face today, please come forward? I know we would love to meet you.

The front runners will be revealed in the next couple weeks, and the race can then really begin. After the cooperation we enjoyed from the world, except from Saudi Arabia, theres no reason for Osama and his organization to still be opperating. Our Afghanistan problems are seeping over to Pakistan, and our problems with Iraq are benefiting Iran in the geopolitical monopoly they've been striving for....We have some real challenges, and their all going to shape the world for the next 100 years. This is the time where we should take our national elections seriously, rather than doubting its importance. I understand thats not what your doing with this article, but many are out there and its serving a counterproductive purpose. Great job on the article!
