Presidential Meta-poem

For Presidents' Day

Peter Flom
I've got one for Washington, I've got one for Lincoln
I've got one for F D R.
But I don't stop with the famous, no!
I go further by far.

For instance, I've got one for Chester A. Arthur
I've got one for Truman who fired MacArthur
I've got one for each Adams, both father and son
But I am not finished! I've barely begun!

I've one for eachBush and one for eachJohnson
Oh what a shame! There's none from Wisconsin!
One for each Harrison (William and Ben).
For Tyler and Taylor (each was POTUS, but WHEN?)

Jefferson, Madison, also Monroe:
They were presidents early, helped our nation grow.
There's one for Coolidge and Harding and Hoover
(Of the depression they were the prime movers).

There's one for Teddy, for Jimmy and Dick
Watergate. Does it make you sick?
There's one for Clinton (I did not lie!)
There's one for Kennedy - how sad that he died.

McKinley and Garfield and Wilson and Hayes!
So many forgotten! I am amazed.
One for Taft, who got so very fat.
And Millard Fillmore - what kind of name is that?

James Knox Polk, and President Ike
(Whose campaign said he was liked).
There's Gerry Ford - remember the "WIN"?
And one for Grant (Oh no! Drunk AGAIN?)

I've got Van Buren, of course I've got Reagan.
(It's safe to say that he was no Carl Sagan).
Here's James Buchanan who never got married
And Jackson and Cleveland; which states did each carry?

What did Pierce do? I admit, I forget
Obama's not done - so no poem yet.
