Fall, you just can't beat it. It is not too hot out to enjoy out of doors activities. It is not so cold that it keeps you huddled under the blankets. Better yet is the wonderful scenery that is a miracle in itself. Fairmont Park in Philadelphia, Pa is a great place to enjoy the wonders of the season of change. Fairmont park is actually now a park system, which includes over sixty different parks and 9,200 acres. It is considered the oldest and largest park in the country*. Because of the warmer climate than other areas outside Philadelphia, like the Pocconos, you can continue to watch the fall foliage into November here.

This is a beautifully preserved park with amazing views all year round. The fall foliage and events are breathtaking. You can enjoy the scenery yourself or with family or friends without participating in their fall group activities if you choose. A wonderful place to wander and just look at the beauty of fall that is surrounding you.

If you choose a group hike or activity, Wissahickon Valley Park has what is called Autumn Trail Ambassador Hikes. Some of these hikes are:

The Heart of the Park
Lower Forbidden Drive
Ecology of the Wissahickon Gorge
The Spirit and Science of
Wissahickon Creek Waters
Mindfulness Hike

If you visit the Friends of the Wissahickon fall 2010 news letter, it will tell you all about these hikes on page seven. I recommend visiting this page before going on any of these structured hikes beause they are very informative about each hike and what physical ability you will need to enjoy these hikes.

Whether you choose to go it alone, or with a structured group, I truly believe you will be awed by the sheer beauty of the fall foliage here at Wissahickon Valley Park. Relax, have fun and come prepared. Pack some food and water, ubut please be sure not to litter, bring your trash back out with you or dispose of it in the proper manner. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and bring a jacket even if it is not cool when you embark on your adventure. You never know the tempature may drop. Do a little research and download the available map at the link provided above to ensure a safe, happy fall foliage tour.

It is a pretty route. I also like River Road (Route 32), along the Delaware, through Bucks County--the New Hope area.
