Pretzel M&Ms: What Were You Thinking?

Mars Shoots for the Moon and Fails

Marie Anne St. Jean
Needing a quick chocolate fix yet wanting something a little different, I purchased a bag of new Pretzel M&Ms Chocolate Candies. I love chocolate and yogurt covered pretzels, and like both plain and peanut varieties of M&Ms, so thought Pretzel M&Ms would be a tasty combination.

I was sadly mistaken.

Pretzel M&Ms don't look a thing like traditional M&Ms nor do they resemble a pretzel. When opening the bag the first thing I thought was that they looked like little gum balls and I didn't find them appealing at all. In my opinion, neither M&Ms nor pretzels are supposed to be round (of course I don't think they should be talking on TV or skipping along the grocery conveyer belt either, but what do I know).

As I popped a few of them into my mouth, I was very disappointed in both the taste and texture. The Pretzel M&Ms were somewhat crunchy as the package indicated, but not crunchy in a pretzel-y way. I also didn't pick up on the 'salty, sweet' as claimed. They felt almost like a malted milk ball in smaller form, but I didn't really taste any pretzel at all, and very little chocolate.

I was also disappointed in the price. Both regular milk chocolate and peanut M&Ms sitting on the same shelf were $ .50 each and I paid $ .76 for the same small bag of new Pretzel M&Ms. I'm not sure if that was due to pricing imposed by WalMart or whether that was the manufacturer's suggested price, but the difference was significant enough that I wouldn't purchase them again, even if I had liked them, but would opt for either of the other M&M candies available instead.

Pretzel M&Ms weigh in with 150 calories per 1.14 oz bag, with 5g of fat giving you 45 fat calories. The package claims they have 30% less fat than the average 8g of fat in leading chocolate brands. The 24g of carbs with only 1g of fiber means you can scratch them off the list if you're following a low-carb diet, although they're not as bad as traditional milk chocolate M&Ms where a 1.69 oz serving has 240 calories, 10g of fat with 90 fat calories and 34g of carbs.

If Mars had made a small pretzel - a flatter one that actually resembled a pretzel - then covered with both chocolate then the traditional M&M candy coating, I think they may have knocked it out of the park. In their present form, I don't think I'd give them a base hit.

    I love pretzel m&m's! They're my go-to candy when I'm on my period :)

You are an idiot. Pretzel m&m's are now officially my favorite candy. The taste and texture is fantastic. It would appear that aging has decreased the accuracy of your taste buds, but that's normal. For all of those who can still taste, these are fantastic.

Thanks. I was curious but didn't actually want to pay for them. Now I don't have to.

Haven't see these here, but from your review I guess I'm not missing anything!

Interesting review. They don't sound very good, that's for sure.

I love choclate covered pretzels, but these...not so much. And they stained my kids teeth- we had to go brush right after eating them!

I like them pretty well, but I'd still opt for peanut M&Ms over the pretzel ones.

I like them. I also like the coconut M&Ms. I don't care for the almond M&Ms nor the peanut butter and jelly M&Ms. Need I say I like M&Ms? I still like regular peanut M&Ms the best...then M&M minis....then plain M&Ms.
