Prevent Dehydration with These Tips

Dehydration can happen really at any time of the year, but summer is the most likely time. Dehydration is when the amount of water is leaving the body (sweating et cetera) faster than any water (liquid) is going back in. Dehydration can lead to death if not prevented and taken care of.

Here are a few tips for helping to prevent dehydration this summer.

The first thing you want to do is drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water. Drink even more on hotter days, or when you are going to be outside in the heat for an extended period of time.

Second, if you are going to have to be outside working, make sure to drink water or sports drinks constantly. One thing that is a good idea is to drink at least a pint of water two hours before you are going to be going outside to work or play. Do not drink sugary sodas. Tea is alright also as long as it is decaffeinated, but water and sports drinks are best. If working is extreme heat make sure to stop every fifteen minutes for a drink break. Drinking at least, but more is better, 6 to 12 ounces of water or sports drink is recommended at each break. If at all possible during each break find a shady spot to stand or sit in. It is best to not sit in an air conditioned room if you have to go back out into the heat.

Never ever wait until you are thirsty to drink. Once you are thirsty this is a sign you have waited too long. If you are out somewhere that you cannot readily get to a water source make sure you take several coolers of water and sports drink with you.

At all costs avoid any type of alcoholic beverages since these will cause you to sweat more and cause the dehydration process to speed up. Also anything with caffeine is not recommended since caffeine is a stimulant and can cause dehydration symptoms to not show up as fast.

Also, your clothing can also help prevent dehydration. Wear only one layer of light colored clothing and change your clothes as soon as you can if they are sweat soaked.

It is recommended that you do not take salt tablets. Most people get plenty of salt in the foods they eat. If you are worried about losing salt when in the heat simply drink the sports drinks as these contain salt and will help replenish salt in your body.

In conclusion, dehydration is preventable. Just follow these few simple steps, and you should make it through the summer heat just fine.

8 to 10 glasses (8 ounces at least) of water is recommended everyday during summer months. Even more is recommended if you have to work or exercise in heat.
