There is no doubt that identity theft is on the rise and it can happen to anyone. It is a very serious crime which we may feel that the law doesn't take it serious enough.

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime. It has been said it is this year's theme, and we do need to take it seriously because some people believe that identity theft only happens to others.

It is often difficult to solve and prosecute, because believe it or not these crimes are quite often committed by friends and families and in these cases, victims may be hesitant to report relatives to the police.

What is Identity theft?

Firstly, it is out of control! Identity theft is the unlawful taking of someone else's real identity for the intention of committing fraud. It is the unlawful collection and misuse of your personal information, usually for criminal purposes.

Identity theft is usually a crime of opportunity, so you may be victimized purely because your information is available.

It is a crime that turns the victim's life into turmoil.

On average, identity theft is not discovered until 14 months after the crime has occurred. It is one of the most dangerous and frightening computer-assisted crimes to surface in this information age. However, it is happening everywhere now, not just online.

Well, what can you do to prevent Identity theft?

You have to minimize your risk by organizing your personal information very carefully.

While it is exceptionally difficult to prevent identity theft, the best approach is to be hands-on and positive.

Take steps to avoid becoming a victim, this guide will help you establish what you can do to prevent identity theft.

We need to do as much as we can as it is a growing concern for millions of people worldwide.

Important tips to prevent identity theft:

Watch for shoulder-surfers

When entering a PIN number or a credit card number. Cover the key pad with your other hand. This will ensure any lurkers won't be able to see anything.

Shred everything

One of the ways that thieves obtain there information is rooting through your bins and trash can.

Destroy digital data

When you trade, sell or dispose of your computer system you need to ensure that the information is deleted altogether.

Remove your name from mailing lists especially credit card offers. This will ensure that unlawful citizens won't be phoning you, trying to get your valuable information.

If you remain careful, you should be able to catch and stop any continuing identity theft before it causes major harm. To stop identity theft early, check your credit reports regularly.

Identity theft is a nightmare for the millions of people that have endured it. Unfortunately, that number rises every year.
