Prevent Your Pet from Chewing the Wrong Things

Pets, especially dogs, puppies and kittens, love to chew. The problem is that they tend to chew on everything, electrical cords, your plants, and your best furniture. To help cut down and prevent your pet chewing on the wrong things follow these tips. Instead of watching your pet chew on everything in sight, show some discipline. Tell them, No, with a firm voice and tap them on the nose, which will let them know that chewing on certain things are off limits. Move the item away and give them something safe to chew. The discipline and replacement will help them learn what to chew and what not to chew.

Some pets will chew on one toy until there is nothing left. Alternate their toys by giving him one or two at a time and then replacing with another a few hours later. This will provide them some variety and cut down on boredom. Boredom causes some pets to chew on anything just to pass the time. To help prevent or cut down on your young pet's chewing habits, make sure you catch their interest with different toys and different ways to present the toys. You can put a string on the end of a toy and drag it around to get them interested in that particular toy or you can put some flavor on the toy, like a dab of peanut butter, they will immediately become friendly with the toy and chew on it instead of your furniture or shoes.

If your pet keeps chewing on the wrong things, try putting something bitter tasting or unpleasant, not harmful, on the item. A bitter taste will turn off your pet and keep him from chewing on the wrong things. You can purchase a pet repellent at pet stores and wipe or spray a little on the objects. You can also try putting something with a spicy taste on the objects like hot sauce. The spicy taste will quickly turn off your pet and prevent them from chewing the wrong things. However, don't put too much hot sauce on the objects.

I can't stand the smell of cheap perfume and neither can pets. To prevent them from chewing on the wrong thing, spray some perfume or cologne on the items. The cheaper the perfume, the better job it will do preventing your pet from chewing on objects. The main reason pets like to chew on your items, like your socks and clothes even some furniture, is because it has your smell on it so it attracts them. Once they find it they will develop a fondness for that item and will constantly chew on it. To prevent your pet from chewing up everything with your smell on it, hide the items, and cover up your best furniture in order to keep your pet from finding them, becoming attached to them and chewing them to pieces.
