Prevent Theme Park Disaster

Keep Your Child Safe

Visiting an amusement park with your family can be a wonderful experience that lasts in your minds for a lifetime. It can also become a tragic experience in seconds.

A child can be separated from you very easily. In my experience working at one of the top rated amusement parks in the world, I have witnessed a number of these types of incidents. Even the most attentive and loving parents have looked away just long enough for their child to be out of sight.

Regarding the incidents that I witnessed, all of the children separated from their parents were reunited with them eventually. These parents are very lucky that the park workers were able to assist them in finding their child. Some parents are not so fortunate and may never reunite with their child.

Most parents don't realize how easily a bad situation can be avoided by following the proper guidelines. Theme parks are filled with distractions, distractions for everyone in your family. You have to be aware that it only takes seconds for a small child to run off, a crowd to walk past, and the child cannot be found. It is virtually impossible to see through a large crowd to look for a person of such short stature. Please read these guidelines very carefully and abide by them if you are attending an amusement park with your children. It may save your child from getting lost or, in worst case scenario, stolen.

Before you visit the park...

* Dress your child in distinct clothing. Bright colors or patterns. Something you can keep your eye on and spot from a distance quickly.

* Remind your child that he or she must stay close to you at all times. Don't frighten the child but let them know that they are going to a big place with lots of people and could get lost very easily.

* If multiple children are attending, at least two adults should be accompanying. It is much easier to keep an eye on all the children at once with more than one adult present.

* Devise a plan in case something should happen. Encourage your children to approach a worker if he or she becomes separated from you. Someone behind the counter at a food stand is the best person to choose. Your child will be able to identify them as an employee without doubt. Do not suggest a meeting place to your child! A large amusement park can be very confusing and overwhelming to a child. The employees will keep your child safe.

While you are having fun at the park...

* Always have your child in sight! Never let them walk behind you! Always keep them in front.

* Hold your child's hand if possible. This is the best way to ensure that they are at your side.

* Kids get excited. They want to run and see the next cool ride or character. You have to keep reminding them that there is time for everything and let them see what they like so they understand that they don't have to race ahead.

* Pay attention when you are getting food and snacks in line. This is where kids wander off the most. Parents are distracted with the cashier or food and the child slips away.

* If your child is missing at any point, immediately alert an employee at the park. They will do everything they can to prevent your child from being taken from the park. They can also let you know if he or she has already been found and waiting for you to retrieve him or her.

* It is very important to make sure that your child understands that he or she should go to an employee for help if they are lost. They should not try to look for you nor should you try to look for them. Approach an employee for help! They will let you know if he or she has been found yet and if not, they will do all they can to help you do so.

* If you have to use the restroom, do not leave the child unattended. Take them into the stall with you if you have to do so.

* Be waiting at the exit door of every ride they get on without you. (kiddie rides)

* Relax and have a good time! Just make sure to watch over your children closely. Your family will have a great time.
