Preventative Birth Control: My Personal Birth Story

Tracy DeLuca
When I met my husband, my eldest child was 9 years old. So, when I got pregnant, when she was 11, it was a very interesting time for her. She loved to feel her baby brother kick and move. So, when it was time to have the baby, I invited her to be in the delivery room with my husband and I and my mother. She said okay but did not want to actually have to see anything gross.

So, I was in the hospital and labor was progressing rapidly. I called my mother and asked her to bring my daughter up to the hospital because the baby would be born soon. Well, the labor went even faster than anticipated! When my mother and daughter arrived at my room, they walked in the door just in time to see the doctor step aside and the crowning head of the baby. All I could hear from my daughter was "Oh, gross!" and some gagging noises! She quickly moved to the other side of the room where she would, hopefully, not have to see anything else. Then, when my son was born, the doctor proceeded to hold the bloody, messy baby up to his sister to show her... while he was still connected to the umbilical cord! I think she almost threw up again. She also got the full experience of seeing the afterbirth be passed. I tried to tell her not to look. Really.

Needless to say, this experience has shaped my daughters views on having babies. She now tells me she might never have children. I just call it preventative birth control before the fact.

You're right, that is definitely the best form of birth control. Great story!

After seeing a short film on childbirth in high school, my daughter came home and announced that she was adopting Korean war orphans. (Despite the fact that the Korean War had been over for 30 years!) I remember seeing my first childbirth film and episiotomy in a college child psychology course. I was an adult student, the only one who had a kid, and I when I saw the episiotomy, and realized that's what they did to me, I was the only one who ran from the room!

Great story, Tracy! I had to laugh at this unusual source of contraception. Maybe your daughter will change her mind eventually, just not too soon! (^;^)

LOL! Yeah, you're probably not getting grandkids from her.

A+ on birth control. But I bet she loves her baby brother even more for having been there.
