1. Shaving in a sensitive area or very dry skin.
2. Too much pressing the shaver against the skin when shaving.
3. Using blunt razors.
To prevent this annoying irritation you can do the followings shaving tips:
1. Wash your face or take a shower before shaving. It helps if your skin is moist. But don't spend too much time in the shower. It will make your skin shrivel so getting a smooth shave will be hard and you will most likely get a razor burn. If you don't want to take a shower just use shaving gel or cream since the main idea here is to moisture your skin before shaving.
2. Always use sharp razor when shaving. Trying to save money by using the razor multiple times is all right but you still need to replace it after 5 or 6 times. Avoid buying hype-marketed razors. They tend to be pricier but their quality really does not justify the price. Go for mid-priced razors, it'll be easier on you when it's time to throw them away.
3. Shave using short strokes. If you apply long strokes the hairs stuck in the shaver can irritate your skin.
4. After each stroke rinse the blade until the leftover hairs are gone from the razor.
5. Press the shaver mildly against the skin. If you use too much pressure the upper-most layer of your skin will be shaved out too.
6. Avoid ingrown hairs by shaving following the direction of the hair growth. Shaving in opposite direction increase the chance of ingrown hairs and getting your skin cut
7. One or passes on the same area is enough. Shaving on the same area over and over again increase the chance of razor burn.
8. If you use shaving cream or gel rinse your face gently and thoroughly after shaving. Any leftover cream or gel can cause skin irritation.
9. Do not use aftershave. It makes you smell good but it's rough on your skin.
