Preventing Women's Heart Disease: Know What You Can Do

Women's heart disease is a leading cause of death for women. After age 65, heart disease is the number one killer of women. Traditionally, heart attacks have been associated with men, but older women are as likely to have heart problems as men. In fact, a woman is much more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer, or any other form of cancer. Also, women are more likely to die from heart disease than men. Experts theorize that this could be due to the fact that women often don't get medical treatment as quickly as men. Another possible explanation is that a woman's blood vessels are smaller, making them more susceptible to damage. This is why it's so important for women to have a heart healthy lifestyle.

Smoking is a leading cause of women's heart disease. Most heart attacks among middle age women are due to smoking. A woman who quits smoking can cut her chances of having a heart attack nearly in half in just two years time. The risk is further reduced when smokers who also take birth control stop smoking. Breathing in secondhand smoke can also lead to heart disease.

High blood pressure is another risk factor for heart disease. Women who have high blood pressure should keep it under control through diet, exercise and any prescribed medication. An over weight person can reduce lower their blood pressure by losing the excess pounds.

Another way to reduce your chances of developing women's heart disease is to control your cholesterol level. Have your doctor check your cholesterol regularly. Eat healthy foods and stay physically active. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help you maintain your cholesterol at a safe level.

Obesity can lead to heart disease, because the excess weight stresses the arteries and heart. Your doctor can tell you what your ideal weight should be, based on your height and bone structure. If necessary, your doctor can also recommend a safe diet program for you to lose weight.

Consistent exercise is one of the best defenses against the onset of women's heart disease. Regular exercise can help your heart stay healthy. Aerobic exercises, such as dancing, swimming, or taking a brisk walk are a good way to give your heart a workout.

Eat a healthy diet. This is important in order to reduce your risk for heart disease. Limit your intake of fatty foods. Your intake of saturated fats should be less than 30 percent. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and lean meats. Not only will this prevent women's heart disease, but it will keep you healthy all around.
