Prevention Now Means a Healthy Smile Later

With all of the talk of health care reform it isn't any wonder that people are thinking more about their health care needs, including their dental care. Following a few simple, and important, steps now can keep your smile bright, white and healthy. Even if you are already having dental problems now you can still get on the path to better health in your mouth if you just take these tips to heart.

First, make sure that you brush your teeth after every meal, or at least three times a day. All you need is a dab of toothpaste in order to clean your whole mouth. The toothpaste will foam up and get into the crack. Brush holding your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and do it in a circular motion. Don't forget your back teeth. Brush your gums, which helps them to stay strong and not recede, and also your tongue, which can add to the bad breath fighting benefits of good mouth hygiene.

Second, floss your teeth daily. It's simple and it helps fight off cavities. Food gets stuck in the spaces between our teeth and brushing doesn't always get all of it out. If you don't get it out it can eat away at your tooth enamel and make your teeth prone to cavities. If you aren't a fan of the traditional string floss you can always by a dental floss pick. But be careful when using picks on your teeth too, you can cause damage to your gums if you aren't gentle.

Third, use mouth wash. Listerine is a wonderful tool in the prevention of cavities and dental diseases like gingivitis. Rinse before you brush to loosen up particles in your teeth, rinse for a nice fresh jolt to your mouth. Rinse when you don't have time to brush, too.

Fourth, stop smoking. It stains your teeth, it leads to plaque problems and to gingivitis and it can cause all sorts of other problems for more than just your mouth. Smoking is bad for every part of your own body and it is bad for all of the people who inhale your second hand smoke.

Fifth, Chew sugarless gum. Sugar-free gum will keep you cavity free by both not adding sugars to your teeth and by helping to clean out particles that eating has left behind. If you have a snack and don't feel like brushing your teeth you can chew some gum to help keep them clean and to help strengthen them too.

Last, make sure you make an appointment with your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning. This too is part of prevention and if you want to have your own teeth into your olden years then you should make sure you don't miss an appointment!
