Preview for Movies Being Released in September 2009

September is one of the least anticipated months in the movie year, as September closes summer, but doesn't quite bring the fall. September is often a dumping ground for some unpromising films, with the odd box office hit and possible Oscar contender breaking through. But September is the kickoff to the final section of the 2009 movie year, nonetheless, as summer explosions slowly give way to fall Oscar bait.

For this September, animation goes post-apocalyptic, Mike Judge goes back to the office, Madea returns from her brief break, and Megan Fox fulfills the dreams of thousands of boys before eating them alive.

September 4

Extract: Mike Judge's newest office comedy has Jason Bateman as a different kind of boss than Bill Lumbergh. Bateman's power plant boss tries not to come apart from work troubles, marital troubles, tempting temp Mila Kunis, and stoner buddy Ben Affleck.

All About Steve: Summer comedy stars Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper come together, though no hangovers or proposals are involved. Cooper's news cameraman barely lives to regret his one-night stand, once Bullock becomes convinced he is the one and stalks him across country - likely in more of a cute fashion than a crazy one.

Gamer: The latest futuristic nightmare involving technology has video game players literally controlling human beings to kill each other in role-playing games. But the game's biggest player, Gerard Butler, decides to take back control and bring down game creator Michael C. Hall while he's at it.

September 9

9: How odd that a movie entitled 9 is opening on 9/9/09. To mark the occasion, 9 presents a dark, post-apocalyptic animated world - overseen by producers Tim Burton and Wanted's Timur Bekmambetov - in which nine special creations must try to survive.

September 11

Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself: Tyler Perry and Madea are slipping, as this is their first movie in about six months. To make up for their lazyness, Perry and Madea have Mary J. Blidge, Gladys Knight and Tariji P. Henson bringing down the house in this latest Perry redemption tale.

Whiteout: The pressures of capturing a killer are even worse for Marshal Kate Beckinsale, as the chase takes place in Antarctica on the last day before the sun sets for half a year.

Sorority Row: The latest cult horror movie to get the remake treatment - in this case, with Bruce Willis's daughter Rumer among the sorority girls being killed off for a deadly secret.

September 18

Jennifer's Body: Being seduced by Megan Fox is the dream of millions of Transformers geeks and males in general. But Diablo Cody goes and only slightly ruins it by casting Fox as a high school demon who literally chews the life out of every boy in sight, with only nerdy Amanda Seyfried capable of stopping her.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: Sony CGI animation brings another young boy dream to life, in which a clumsy inventor makes it so food falls from the sky.

Love Happens: The latest self-help specialist that needs self-help himself is Aaron Eckhart, whose guru finds a new lease on life thanks to Jennifer Aniston.

The Informant!: Steven Soderbergh returns to the mainstream, getting Matt Damon to gain weight as a real-life corporate informant whose antics and delusions threaten to derail the corporate crimes investigation he's helping out.

Bright Star: Limited release of perhaps the first Oscar-bait film of the season, as director Jane Campion returns to the Oscar race with this romance between dying poet John Keats and lover Fanny Brawne. Oscar buzz for Abbie Cornish and Ben Whishaw as the couple has built up since Cannes.

September 25

Fame: The original Fame hasn't lived forever, but it has lived long enough to get remade and open the New York City High School of Performing Arts again.

Surrogates: Bruce Willis gets unplugged as he investigates murders involving the surrogate robots that now perform every task for humanity.

Pandorum: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster and a team of astronauts try to recover their memories before it is too late.

Coco Before Chanel: Audrey Tautou steps into the shoes and clothes of fashion mogul Coco Chanel.
