Spider-Man 3. Everyone's favorite web slinger is back for the third installment of the comic book masterpiece. This time Tobey Maguire and his on-screen beau Kirsten Dunst will face off against Sandman (played by Thomas Haden Church) and Venom (Topher Grace). This sequel promises to be a darker movie than the first two, and previews look incredibly promising. Spider-Man 3 opens May 4.
28 Weeks Later. Not far behind Spider-Man 3 is the sequel to the zombie thrill-ride, 28 Days Later. 28 Weeks Later appears to be as bloody and suspenseful as the first. It takes place six months after the last of the infected have died off, in a new eerier England. The previews look scarier than hell. 28 Weeks Later opens May 11.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. When last we saw Captain Jack Sparrow, he was about to be breakfast for the dreaded Kraken. Now, Captain Barbossa, Will Turner, and Elizabeth will risk their own necks by traveling to World's End to save in him in this swashbuckling sequel, the third installment of Disney's surprisingly successful pirate franchise. At World's End opens May 25.
Hostel: Part II. If you haven't seen the original Hostel, get yourself to a video store, because this Eli Roth vehicle is one of the best things to happen to horror movies since Jason Vorhees fell into that lake. It's sick, it's twisted, it's gory, it's downright stomach turning. It's awesome. Hostel: Part II opens June 8.
Live Free or Die Hard. Okay, so the title sucks big time. But who can turn down another shot to catch Bruce Willis as the badass cop John McClane. It has been twelve years since producers blew up New York in Die Hard with a Vengeance, so it's about time McClane got himself into some wild mess. Live Free or Die Hard opens June 27.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Along with the release of the seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter fans have something else to look forward to this summer: the release of the fifth movie, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Gary Oldman. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opens July 13.
As far as I'm concerned, those are the only must-see movie sequels this summer. However, I'm sure others would disagree. So, also of note are: Ocean's Thirteen, Rush Hour 3, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Evan Almighty, and The Bourne Ultimatum.
Enjoy this summer's must-see movie sequels!
