Large Size for a Portable
Larger than Sony's PSP 3000, the NGP measures 182 mm x 18.6 mm x 83.5 mm. This large display is well thought out and capable of some dangerous game play. The screen measures five inches and has four times the resolution of its predecessor. Two touch sticks are added for more intense play.
The back of the device has a touch pad that is oriented in the same alignment as the front display giving the gamer two touch surfaces. The two surfaces allows for an array of manipulations that include push and pull. The combination also gives grab and trace ability for some really serious gaming.
Up to Date Features
Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity brings this NGP into the modern world. A new way to load games using flash memory cards brings convenience in a small foot print.
The Universal Media Disk, used by the current PSP model, is missing. The old games are left out in the cold but the current PSP games that can be downloaded are compatible.
The NGP has many features that have found their way to other portable units. It will contain motion sensors, GPS capability, and a 3-axis compass. A fun feature allows interaction between other gamers with location based gaming.
Availability and Price
Sony proclaims that the NGP will be shown the middle of February. The price of the unit has not been announced as this time. Sony plans on showing off their new device at the Mobile World Congress that will take place in Spain.
The Competition
The main competitor to the Sony NGP is Nintendo's upcoming 3DS system. The 3DS will allow three dimensional game playing without the uncomfortable 3D glasses.
Games
Activision is getting in the act with their Call of Duty available soon. Sega is boasting their game "Yakuza 4" is currently ready for the NGP. Look for many more to climb on the band wagon.
Conclusion
Seasoned gamers should find Sony's new NGP to be much like the larger console experience. With the touch sticks in addition to the two touch surfaces it should be joy to play. The design allows for hours of comfortable gaming..
A big negative is incapability with the legacy disc media. Concerns have also been noted about the battery life with such a large portable.
