The Vice Presidential Debate May Provide Comic Relief in Uncertain Times
From coast to coast and Ohio in the middle, the day will close on Tuesday, September 30, with more interest in a failure by politicians to pass a $700 billion bailout plan than any hope of the comic relief that is expected from this up-coming debate of vice presidential candidates.
The Vice Presidential Debate and Avoiding Gaffes
Both candidates are battling gaffes on the campaign trail. In the competition for the biggest laughs, the Republican party hopes that Sarah Palin can avoid being associated to closely to comedienne Tina Fey's parody of her on Saturday Night Live. Republicans need Sarah Palin to be believable. With the Democrats making head-way in the polls, many in the party hope that Joe Biden can listen long enough for Sarah Palin to make America laugh.
If successful, the Democrats can expect to win this debate while the Republicans will be left fighting an 800-pound economic gorilla, the slowly spreading Mideast violence, and Sarah Palin's resemblance to Tina Fey. For the Democrats, keeping Joe Biden on point should give him a clear edge over Palin's inability to get a political point across without signaling her ability to be comical more than presidential.
Democrat Senator Joseph Biden, and Republican Governor Sarah Palin campaigned in the key states of Ohio and Pennsylvania on the Monday before the vice presidential debate. Three days after the leaders of both political parties announced the defeat of an economic package geared at shoring up American financial institutions, the vice presidential candidates will be on the forefront of information regarding the financial crisis America is currently facing. If America needs reassurance that their leaders are ready to handle the increased risk of financial fallout, America should be ready for less than what they need during this debate of opposing political parties.
The Vice Presidential Debate and Economic Woes
The "bait and switch" is on. Thursday's vice presidential debate will be the comic relief we need to distract us from economic insecurity, and a drastic alteration in the American political landscape. Ask any Twitter user what they expect to hear from Sarah Palin and Joe Biden in the up-coming debate held at Washington U. in Missouri, and they'll tell you that they hope to be more than amused. @awewriter is an uncommitted voter who reads much of his news as it is suggested by other social Internet friends who relate the information ti him as newsworthy. "From what I see in my news, both candidates have a lot of work to do to improve their leadership roles." @awewriter suggests that the candidates start getting their information straight, and improve how they relate their message to the voter. "I want something that tells me someone has their hand on the wheel, not something I already know." "I know I'm going to get a good laugh."
As the sun rises on Thursday, comments will be posted into Ohio's Topix forums to discuss how a thread that read "Bailout agreement reached" was posted just a bit too early. Like "Dewey Defeats Truman," the news for the day will be about where the next punch is coming from rather than a discussion of problem solving. Politicians should take heed of what voters are really learning about them and their politics. While this vice presidential debate should bring a better understanding of how the presidential candidates understand the problems we face today, expectations are low. This vice presidential debate can be looked forwards to as comic relief in between two slices of bad news served by a less than capable waiter or waitress.
