Preying for Mercy - a Riddle in Rhyme for a Puzzling Time

Linda Ann Nickerson
Have a mugg of coffee here,
And try to solve this puzzle clear.
Don't get your feathers in a fluff.
Just ask for help, when you've had enough!

If it were golf, perhaps you may,
Grant me a special bird of prey.
On a par-four hole, my second shot
Would score me two, the best I've got.

Much better than birdie, oh, what a dream,
But things are not always as they seem.
Just ask a Tiger, and you'll find
He knows the bird, exactly what kind!

You'll catch it now; you're out of the Woods,
These preying birds, they wear no hoods.
But talons long and sharp have they,
To snatch the mousies as they may.

They eat these morsels in tiny bites,
These wicked birdies, known as kites.
Now have you caught the missing word?
Here's a big hint: It's a big bird!
