Primus get serious and yet seriously silly as the first bass guitar led band that comes to mind for me. I've never listened to one of their full albums until now and now being with the album "Green Naugahyde." There was some fun to be had and some, "yep, just sounds like some boring ole Primus" moments as well. I take note of these moments with my song by song review below. Naugahyde, by the way, is a type of artificial leather ala pleather.
"Prelude To A Crawl": Reverb a dingle-dangle minute of nadda.
"Hennepin Crawler": Well, you can ride the Hennepin Crawler for a dollar. The fun wacky storyteller is alive and well here, but the music is not as interesting as some of their past hits; well, cult hits. It drifts into a goofy sounding jam session.
"Last Salmon Man": You can crank this song up and grin and even tap your foot to it a little. Fun.
"Eternal Consumption Engine": A funny commentary on Americans and their spending habits. Dramatically hilarious with the horror that everything is made in China.
"Tragedy's A Comin'": Reminds me of that " We Got The Funk" song, but with Primus telling a silly tale by speaking into the microphone lyrics. Kind of blah.
"Eyes Of The Squirrel": Random nonsense that probably wishes it were a Shel Silverstein poem or something.
"Jilly's On Smack": More boring than it is silly or hauntingly cute.
"Lee Van Cleef": Everyone wants to be Clint Eastwood, but he wants to be Lee Van Cleef. Cool tribute, but the target listener is probably too specific for most to replay this one much.
"Moron TV": A little more of a bite to the angst on this one, but the song is more or less delivered like most of the others before it with vocal style in the vein of "Hennepin Crawler" and "Tragedy's A Comin'." Lacks punch and punchiness.
"Green Ranger": Who wants to ride with the Green Ranger? No one, slow going nowhere dull ride.
"HOINFODAMAN": Seems like they're trying to poke fun at society again, but it's a tired dog on this one.
"Extinction Burst": Dip dip mop mop was a funny opening, but the rest of the song is not hanging and listening music.
"Salmon Men": Just a short, less than a minute reminder that there was a song about a Salmon man earlier.
"Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers": More mumbo jumbo I don't care about. Live concert recording style.
