Prince Harry is an officer in the British Army. He is a second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals). Prince Harry has also founded a charity called Sentebale with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to help children orphaned by Aids.
Harry's decision to join the armed forces means he is following in the footsteps of other royals, including his father, the Prince of Wales, who trained to be a pilot with the RAF.
He also served in the Navy, as did the Duke of Edinburgh, while Harry's uncle Prince Andrew was a helicopter pilot during the Falklands war.
Harry completed his "recce soldier" training as a member of the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals in October.
He spent four-and a half months learning to be a troop leader, focusing first on driving, maintenance and communications at Bovington camp in Dorset.
The Prince then moved on to firing ranges at Lulworth before finishing his training at Warminster, honing his tactical skills.
He began his army career at Sandhurst Military Academy in Surrey, where he spent 44 weeks training to be an officer..
His Blues and Royals regiment will serve in Iraq for six months as part of the latest deployments.
The prince will be the first senior royal to serve on the front line since Prince Andrew in the Falklands in 1982.
Known to colleagues as Troop Commander Wales, he is able to lead reconnaissance units known as the Army's "eyes and ears".
Confirmation of the deployment comes after Prime Minister Tony Blair told MPs that 1,600 British troops would return from Iraq within the next few months.
He said the 7,100 serving troops in the south of Iraq around Basra would be cut to 5,500 soon, with hopes that 500 more will leave by late summer.
The Defense Ministry has previously confirmed Harry could go to Iraq if his unit was deployed there, but said he might be kept out of situations where his presence would jeopardize his comrades.
Defense Secretary Des Browne is expected to announce February 26,2007 that the prince, who is third in line to the throne, will be deployed along with his regiment near Basra in southern Iraq, The Daily Mirror newspaper reported, citing an unnamed senior military official.
A royal family spokesman declined to comment and the Defense Ministry called the report speculative, saying upcoming Iraq deployments had yet to be finalized.
What will happen to Prince Harry? Will he be deployed to Iraq? Is the third in line to the thrown taking a chance with his life? Coming from a family that has history in the Army,Navy and Marines. They don't think that it's taking a chance.
Prince Harry was quoted saying "I didn't take all this training to watch my fellow friends out there doing all the dirty work."
Sending a Prince into war can bring great down falls. He could be targeted as a hostage to be used as collateral. You have to stop and think if it's worth giving one person with this title a chance at doing his dream. Is it really worth it.You have to respect the fact that Prince Harry is willing to risk his life, but could he really be putting others in danger?
Prince Harry is only following in the shadows of his family. He has alot to live up to.Is this just a political move for attention? Or is Prince Harry really following his dream? Will he really be deployed to Iraq? We will not know that answer just yet.
