Prince of Persia Review (PS3)

S.R.
Prince of Persia is an action-adventure game released on the Playstation 3 and developed by Ubisoft Montreal. The Prince of Persia series is one of the most loved and well known. Well, I suppose it used to be though it slipped out of favor over the years. Here we have yet another attempt to modernize it for today's audiences. Let's see how Ubisoft Montreal did.

Story : The story... isn't great. But it's not bad either. It's really generic cliched story just used as a setting to give you a reason to play the game. There isn't much in the way of development or motivation, but still the story here is decent and not horrible. People raved about the ending but I found it quite cliche as well. Perhaps you'll like it.

Graphics : Do you have eyes? If so, you'll love the graphics in this game as they are flat out amazing. One of the strongest features of the Prince of Persia franchise is it's ability to really bring the gamer into the world with really distinctive graphics. Well, this game took that to a whole new level. Never has a Prince of Persia game looked so beautiful. The art, the animation, the backgrounds, the atmosphere. It's all here, it's perfection.

Sound : The game also offers a really enjoyable experience, sound wise. It would have been easy for Ubisoft to make the music more marketable but instead they stuck to their guns and went for the authentic Prince of Persia experience. The music is really good, the sound effects even better. Everything here is appropriate and mixed well. I didn't like the voice acting very much, but others did. I found it pretty lacking overall, but your mileage may vary.

Game play : Many people complain about the lack of difficulty. They may be right, but the exact opposite is far worse and that's what Prince of Persia games usually are. Frustratingly hard. Instead, this game is far more lenient and makes the game actually playable. This is the first Prince of Persia game I've actually played all the way through, and that says something for the previous difficulties of games past. The game is still essentially a plat former but it's a very good, with fluid and responsive controls. Just like the old sword duel sections of games, you can only walk during duels. I wish they'd fix this but it's a minor gripe. I do like that most of the game is about jumping and avoiding traps, combat is something that's overrated in video games these days.

Re playability : The game is really fun and thus, really re-playable.

Overall : 8/10. A worthy adaptation to the Prince of Persia franchise.
