Prince's Super Bowl Halftime Performance Revealing?

Christiana Sayyah
It was only three years ago in Super Bowl 2004 when the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" occurred with Janet Jackson. The nation was shocked and disgusted, but for anyone who watched this years Super Bowl and saw the Prince halftime show, I think you'll agree with me that it was perfectly fine entertainment for any family to watch. There has been recent speculation, however, that his performance was too revealing.

Now we all can agree that Prince is a sex symbol. He is a rock legend and no matter how risque' he has been in the past, he is still critically praised and nationally adored. He may have his own way of doing things, but that's his personal style and part of his stage persona, not a secret plan to shock the nation.

He performed a slew of his hits during his halftime show including the smash, "Purple Rain." The show couldn't have been more dazzling with a huge stage in the shape of Prince's symbol that lit up and even started off with fire blazing around the edges. There was a full marching band who had glow-in-the dark strips on which illuminated when the lights would dim during the performance. There were dancers, back-up singers, the works. It was truly a great performance. Even as the rain continued to come down on them all, they played like pro's, especially Prince.

During "Purple Rain" the lights on the stage changed to an intense hue of violet that lit up the arena. Prince was playing his signature dark purple guitar, in the shape of his symbol. A huge, dark cornflower sheet was raised and flowed to show Prince's shadow behind it. The shadow cast of Prince playing his guitar from it's placement was rude to some; this is what has caused the illogical controversy.

Now, Prince has done much more shocking things than this shadow show. At the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, Prince wore a pair of butt-less, yellow pants. His fourth album was titled Controversy with such song titles as "Jack U Off" and "Sexuality." Clearly, Prince has mixed it up a bit in his professional life, but he did not bring that to the stage for Super Bowl 41.

According to Wikipedia.com, in 2001, he became a Jehovah's witness to comply with his dying mother's last wish. He has contributed to many bands and acts, been in or involved with countless movies, has 40 some albums out, and has been in the industry a long time, with much success. Someone of his credibility and humility, surely knows when it's appropriate to be sexual and when it's not.

The bottom line is, he put on a great show even under conditions that would probably make most artists of his rank pull out of the show. Whether people are offended or not is just ridiculous. If you didn't like it, why did you watch it? Come on people, it's just a guitar.

  • Shadow show suggestive?
  • Prince is a sexual artist, but he is a professional.
  • People need to quit being so sensitive.

Revealing? It was quite the opposite.

I was more offended by those trombones, sliding in and out in the darkness. How rude! :)
