Princess Beatrice Famous Wedding Antler Hat Sold at Auction for $130K

It was successfully sold on eBay to an anonymous bidder for a record-breaking 80,000 pounds or $130,000. Princess Beatrice's hat may have been considered hideous and age inappropriate for the 22-year old, but she has gotten the last laugh now. Whether you loved or despised her hat it caused quite a sensation worthy for a charity auction. The proceeds from the winning bid will go to two British charities.

Little Bee Initiative

There were a total of 40 bidders on eBay for this anonymous auction set up for Beatrice's charities to go through her Little Bee Initiative. The British charities are UNICEF UK and Children in Crisis. She has stated "I've been amazed by the amount of attention the hat has attracted. It's wonderful opportunity to raise as much money as possible for two fantastic charities." A Children in Crisis spokesperson was absolutely delighted the Princess choose their charity along with another to receive money from the auction.

Has Princess Beatrice Created a Hat Sensation Trend?

The designer of her attention-getting headpiece that resembled either two swans on a lake or a reebok with horns came from Irish milliner, Phillip Treacy. He is known for designing hats not only for royal occasions, but for haute couture shows. Even though the royal wedding was a formal, traditional and conservative occasion a few guests took some fashion risks.

Princess Beatrice who is fifth in line to the throne is the oldest daughter of Prince Andrew, the uncle of Prince William, and her mother Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. With the debut of Beatrice's hat it seemed to spread a week later in the U.S. during the Kentucky Derby, an event where grandstand attendees wear lavish hats. Perhaps other famous celebrities and royals will auction their standout dresses, hats and other accessories to charities just like Beatrice in the near future.

Well isn't that something! A bit of a high price tag for me though. :-)
