Princess Fiona first appears in the original Shrek movie in the magic mirror where she is one of three eligible girls. She is locked in a castle tower guarded by an evil dragon and must be rescued. Lord Farquaad is a bit too pasty to do it himself, so he bargains with the ogre Shrek to do it. Shrek rescues Fiona (without slaying the dragon!) and as he and Fiona travel back to Farquaad the audience realizes Fiona has a secret. She turns into an ogre at night. Fiona falls in love with Shrek on their way back to the castle but she almost ends up marrying Farquaad anyway. Luckily, Shrek busts in and saves her at the last moment. When Fiona and Shrek kiss she becomes an ogre permanently and they are married.
In Shrek 2, Fiona and Shrek travel back to her homeland Far, Far Away where Fiona and Shrek meet up with her mom, dad, and Fairy Godmother. The Fairy Godmother wants Fiona to end up with her son Prince Charming and has Fiona, Shrek, and Donkey beautified under a curse. Her plan to have Fiona kiss Prince Charming fail as Fiona and Shrek know they love each other best as ogres.
In Shrek the Third, Fiona is an ogre for the entire movie and becomes acting ruler of Far, Far Away while her father is sick (and dies) and Shrek travels to find a cousin. In this film Fiona has to call upon her fellow princesses to defeat Prince Charming who is trying to take over the thrown. This film also features Fiona as a pregnant woman who has triplets at the end of the movie!
Shrek Forever After shows Fiona, Shrek, and the Triplets, but after Shrek is given an alternate reality, Fiona is actually a wanted woman and outlaw leader! This is sure to be an interesting arc in the development of the Fiona persona. Cameron Diaz, the voice of Fiona, is well-suited to bringing out the fun in having a price on one's head, and watching Fiona fall in love with Shrek again (hopefully!) is well worth the price of admission.
Princess Fiona has been a fun Shrek character, and it will be interesting to see how her person develops in the alternate world of Shrek Forever After before reaching the final resolution of the film.
