Princess Grace's Son to Marry -- Prince Albert's Wedding Date Set

A Monaco Prince Takes an African Bride

Radell Smith
A royal wedding date between Monaco Prince Albert II and South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Whittstock has been set. The only problem is that there are two dates--not just one, according to USA Today.com.

Prince Albert II isn't like mere mortal men, he is in charge of overseeing a principality of people. With such responsibility comes ruling protocols and expectations, as a prince's wedding day isn't really just his own. He can't wrap everything up in one nice neat ceremony like average folk, it takes two. Prince Albert's famous mother Princess Grace learned this herself, when she left her throne in Hollywood to become Prince Rainier's bride back in 1956.

Deceased Princess Grace of Monaco: Grace's son to take a bride

You remember Princess Grace of Monaco? Grace Kelly was her maiden name. She was a member of a wealthy family from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who became a leading and talented Hollywood actress. Princess Grace was a classical beautiful who got swept away from the glitter of bright lights by Prince Rainier while at Cannes one year, marrying him in April of 1956 and thereby ending her film career.

Grace bore Rainier three children: Caroline, Stephanie and Albert, before dying tragically in an auto accident in 1982. Her young daughter Stephanie was in the vehicle at the time.

Grace's son Prince Albert is now getting married himself.

Prince Albert II and Charlene Whittstock set royal wedding date

The royal heir to the throne-one of the driving factors in Prince Rainier's desire to marry-is slated to tie the knot in July 2011. Albert is marrying a woman that could have been his mother's equal in stature and looks: Charlene Whittstock is tall, slender and sports the same classical look, with hair upswept from her face.

Prince Albert's fiance is a former Olympic swimmer who hails from South Africa instead of the States, like his mother Princess Grace. The pair will actually have two weddings.

Albert and Charlene's first wedding will be performed as a civil ceremony on July 8, 2011. Their next wedding will occur on July 9th, as a religious wedding ceremony. The prince of Monaco is 51 years old and has reigned over the Principality of Monaco since his father, Prince Rainier, died in April of 2005, 49 years after the death of his mother.

This is pretty standard in Europe. First comes the civil ceremony and then the church wedding. Not sure why, but that's the way it is. Looking forward to the photos.
