Prison Break Actor Shouldn't Take Full Responsibility of Tragic Accident

Lane Garrison's Reckless Driving Examined

Alexandra Lang
It's all over the news. "Lane Garrison is charged after a fatal crash."

The former Prison Break actor, who plays "Tweener" on the show, has been charged with felony vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and a misdemeanor count for providing alcohol to a minor for his recklessness in the December car crash last year, which resulted in the death of Vahagn Setian, a 17-year-old high school student of Beverly Hills High School.

Yet, as much fault as Garrison was for drinking and driving - his alcohol level had been above twice the legal limit - he is not solely at fault for the incident. The teenagers, who decided to enter his car knowing full well that Lane was intoxicated, were foolish and should have known right from wrong. The idea that Setian was young and and didn't know right from wrong is ignorant. With all the D.A.R.E. teachings from middle school to the Health classes required in high school, Setian and the other two teenage girls should have known better than to enter his car. Perhaps it was the glamorous idea of being with a Hollywood actor that enticed them to enter his car. No one will know, but Garrison should not have to take the full responsibility. He did not force them to enter his car, they entered the car through their own decisions and thus, should be held accountable for their foolish decisions. Setian is not a saint for dieing in the accident. He is just the poster child of drunk driving and foolish teenagers.

The statement released by Setian's parents, "They have lost their only child due to Lane Garrison's recklessness" is completely ridiculous. Where were they when their "only" child decided to enter Garrison's car or when their "only" child decided to go out and part? The parents for all three teenagers should also take some responsibilty for not teaching their teens right from wrong and for not knowing where their teenagers were. According to eyewitnesses, Garrison had met them at a gas station and then accompanied them to a house party. Again, the parents of the Setian should be ashamed of themselves for blaming everything on Lane. If they had been more responsible and looked after their child better, Setian would have never met Garrison.

Of course Garrison is very much in blame for driving while intoxicated, his actions were irresponsible; however, the prosecution should definitely examine why Setian would have entered Garrison's car. If Setian had been walking on the street and had been hit by Garrison's car, then Garrison would be at full fault, but because Setian had also been sitting in Garrison's car, the question is, why would a 17-year-old who should have known better, be sitting in a intoxicated man's car? There's no doubt that Garrison must be regretting his decision to drink and drive, after all, he is responsible for the death of one human being and he will face jail time up to ten years.

Garrison should not, by all means, receive a pardon for his actions; however, it is imperative to realize that he is not solely responsible for the events of December's tragic accident.

To Brittany H - thanks for the comment, but I think you should reread the article. It's easy to put all the blame on Garrison because he's an adult who drove under the influence with underage teenagers in his car. And while he should be duly punished, the sad fact is, where were the parents of these teenagers when their kids were out roaming the streets of LA? There is a sad irony to this story because it raises the question how much parents need to be in their children's lives. Obviously, they can't prevent drunk driving from happening or any other tragic event to happen, but the self righteous indignant anger they have directed at Garrison, is an anger they should also direct at themselves. What is right and what is wrong? Drunk driving is wrong, buying alcohol for minors is wrong, but so is not knowing who your kids are hanging out with and where they are at night. This article should be read as serving a warning that there is a complexity to every situation.

I can't believe that you are saying it is the parents fault. You should be ashamd of yourself. Garrison should be punished for the crime he committed. It doesn't matter if they got in a car with a drunk man, Garrison killed an innocent child. Luckily, he didn't anyone else. The parents of this young man lost their only child, give them a break. Garrison should have known better than to drink and drive, and yes they shouldn't have got in the car with him, but that still doesn't make it right to say it's the parents fault. Not only did Garrison take away a son, but he also took away a friend, a boyfriend. Garrison has to live with those images in his head for the rest of his life along with the two girls that were there that night. Vahagn Setian did not get to fullfil his life why let the person that killed him, fullfil his?
