In addition to this strange coincidence, the group is also being held in a prison run by prisoners. Sona was abandoned by the guards after a riot the previous year and the guards no only maintain the border and don't actually enter the prison. Because of the lack of guards the prisoners have made their own rules which are enforced by Luchero, one of the prisoners. The main rule in the prison is that if one inmate has a problem with another they challenge them to a fight to the death and the prisoner being challenged can't refuse. Naturally, Michael is challenged shortly after arriving, he does not want to fight, but has no choice and must defend himself. When he learns he must kill the other prisoner he seems like he has given up and he may have been killed if Mahone had not killed the other prisoner. Mahone explained that he had reason to kill the prisoner because he had a knife and the rules of the fight are no weapons.
Lincoln tries to meet up with LJ who called him to let him know that Sara had found him and where to meet them. When Lincoln gets there he is instead greeted by a woman who gives him a message to pass along to his brother. At the end of the episode Lincoln informs Michael that he must break out one of the prisoners in Sona or LJ and Sara will be killed.
The episode mostly is just setting up for what is going to happen throughout the season and reminding viewers where the characters were left off last season. There was no mention of Sucre in the premier, leaving viewers to wonder if he will be a part of this season. Despite how obviously impossible the story is, there is a lot of possibility for this season to go well and the show to continue to be successful.
