Prison Hostels: Spend a Night in Jail

Amy Kay
Spending the night in a foreign prison is no fun and, under normal circumstances, not recommended. Unless, of course, you book a room at one of these prison hostels. Travelers can sleep in an authentic cell and enjoy all the luxuries of a real prisoner! While not the most comfortable accommodations, these hostels are perfect for fearless travelers looking for an exciting experience.

Ottawa Jail Hostel

The former Carleton County Jail is said to be one of Canada's most haunted buildings, so it's not for a faint of heart. Ottawa Jail hostel is located in the heart of Ottawa at 75 Nicholas Street-- close to major transit areas. This unique accommodation is amok with paranormal activity. The resident ghost--Patrick James Whelan, was the victim of Canada's last public hanging. Some say that you can find his spirit still lingering on death row. Cells doors lock on their own although the locks have been removed years ago. Guests have also reported hearing disembodied voices reciting prayers-- a perfect night time lullaby.

Karosta Prison

For a more authentic jail experience book a room at Karosta Prison hostel. You can find this hostel in Western Latvia Invalidu Street 4, Liepaja. 'Prisoners' or visitors have the option to book the "Extreme Night" package. This nightly package offers a full night in a jail cell laced with interrogations, cell checks, cold showers and verbal abuse from 'prison guards'. Intermittent toilet cleaning should also be expected.

The horror of Karosta prison is very real. As a former Soviet Military prison, the jail houses prisoners from the early days of the Russian Revolution and through Nazi occupation. Some say that there are tormented prison ghosts that roam the corridors. Add those ghost visits to the bed of wooden planks on which you will be sleeping, and you have an equation for a non-restful night.

Napier Prison Backpackers

If you still haven't gotten your fill of foreign prisons you might opt to spend the night at the oldest prison in New Zealand. Napier Prison Backpackers is located at 55 Coote Road Napier, Hawke's Bay. You can sleep in an authentic cell where prisoner's graffiti is still on the walls and bunks. Or you can hang out in the hanging yard and listen to stories of the numerous ghostly sightings around the facility. The laid back atmosphere is perfect for weary travelers.

Is this for real? I think I would rather sleep in my car.

I had heard of something similar but I'm thinking it was a county jail. This sounds far more intimidating!

Actually I think it's kind of cool :) Of course, it seems a little different to those who have the option of deciding when they will leave. :) Good read!

Think it'd bring back too many memories... memories I've worked hard to supress.

I do not think that I would spend one night in these hotels but it is very interesting to know that they even exist. Thank you for a great article.

Well I just never thought of that. If Alcatraz offered this I would do it! I wouldn't leave my good ole USA for the abuse. Thanks Amy for letting us know!
