A Funny Story a Parolee Recently Told Me.

Jaahda Jinnah
It was very funny as he told it but you'll have to insert your own imagery and actions;

He was sitting behind a truck on one of our major arterial roads recently not too far behind a truck that he said was traveling along like a bat out of hell* There was a box on the back of the truck that seriously looked like it might be about to fall off the back - so he was attempting to signal the driver by using various methods of attracting his attention. The truckies* only response was to use some very rude finger sign-age.
As the truck screamed around a corner racing against the amber light the box fell off the truck - bouncing around on the road, causing many sparks as the contents of the box were dispelled. The parolee stopped and gathered up the box and all of its contents - to allay possible accidents. He figured he was being a very responsible citizen.

The box turned out to contain a very extensive and expensive set of electrical and other tools so after scooping them all up he took it to the nearest police station and told them it had fallen off the back of a truck (which is slang in Australia for something that has been stolen then on sold). There was just no way could he get the police to believe him - and they refused to take the box and its contents into their custody.

So he decided reluctantly to take it away with him and, instead of using them himself decided he had better sell them in case he later lost his parole for being in possession of stolen goods.

* Bat out of hell; Aussie vernacular for 'going like the clappers' or speeding along as if nothing else in the world matters.
* Truckies - Aussie vernacular for truck drivers.

    Good story... funny that you "translate" Bat out of hell as Aussie vernacular for 'going like the clappers.' I know the expression bat out of Hell (one of my favorite rock albums - by an American, by the way - bears that title). But, "going like the clappers" is totally foreign to me.
