Prison activist's are trying to get this movie banned, and are boycotting this movie from Massachusetts to Texas. There have been picketing outside The Lloyd theater in Boston when this movie first aired, and in many other cities.
This movie is advertised on AOL, showing a bar of soap with the title "Let's Go to Prison" carved into it, using slogans like "Share the Laughter." It's a big joke that is all too common. It doesn't have to be explained, we all know what that means. For someone who has been the victim of a prison rape, this is not funny at all.
Not all sexual assaults are reported due to retaliation and fear, so statistics on this issue would never be accurate. Assaults are not only from other inmates, but from the guards as well. Some inmates are actually owned by other inmates and sold for sex. Women rapes occur from male guards, and many times pregnancy occurs. There is a high percentage of inmates with HIV and other contagious diseases, and prison rapes add to those percentages.
This movie also makes light of prison murders, the cost of incarceration, poor nutritional food, prison labor, prison violence,"dumb jurors",and abusive guards. This movie also suggests that if you have money you can get out of prison. These are all problems within our justice system that prison reformists are working to change. Reports show that one in every thirty-two people in America are either on parole, probation, or in prison. These statistics are the highest they have ever been, and USA leads the world in it's prison population.
America Online, partners with Universal Studios has an online game to play when you access the movie site http://www.letsgotoprison.com/. You can click and play a game of "Tattoos," or "what kind of prisoner are you?". Quite amusing, but not to those that are in prison.
I would like to see a movie about the brutal reality of prisons. Until society sees that we have a big problem with our justice system, the prisons will continue to overflow, and the statistics will get higher and higher. The next person to go to prison could be someone you love, or it could be you!

Post a CommentYes, more legislators should be murdered. Convicted felons cannot vote, so our leaders are not really elected. We need to all get together and find a way to kill them.
I'm not the kind of person who gets easily offended by movies or TV shows making insensitive jokes. I watch 'Family Guy' all the time and it's made various jokes about prison rape, and furthermore, the episode where Peter goes for a prostate exam, and then Peter accuses his doctor of trying to molest him didn't really bother me that much. I think the angry parents out there claiming that real-life rape victims would be offended are just being a bunch of drama queens. However, some movies that make jokes about prison rape excessively can be bothersome. I think the only kind of people that DESERVE to be raped are the rapists themselves, not just CHILD rapists, but ADULT rapists as well. But gang-bangers, drug-dealers, thieves, people who receive DUIs, and so forth deserve to be punished, but not punished by being raped.
Perfect example to illustrate my point
There is absolutely nothing funny about prison rape. If a WOMAN is beaten to the ground and raped, nobody will even snicker. In fact, it's considered a human rights tragedy. But when MALE prison rape occurs, people tend to think it's funny. Jokes have made about it in movies and on comedy shows 8 million times, and as a 58-year-old MAN, I find this double-standard to be beyond infuriating. People tend to think with this macho attitude, "Men are the stronger sex, so it's not really rape. They should be a man and suck it up." When people say stuff like that, I can't even DESCRIBE how much it infuriates me while using polite language. Be it a woman or a man, just because they did something illegal and got arrested for it doesn't mean that having them get raped is an appropriate course of action. Being arrested, not being able to watch movies, sleeping in an uncomfortable bed, and having a tough time getting a job when released is enough of a punishment in itself. Ever seen 'Sleepers'? Per
ONLY child molesters deserve this treatment (I'm sorry, but maybe this way they can feel empathy for the children they raped.) Otherwise, there is nothing funny at all about prison rape, and it is APPALLING that it is allowed (yes, ALLOWED!) to continue!
While there is no question in my mind that this movie is insensitive and offensive, to say the least, I do not agree that it should be banned. I don't believe in the banning of movies or books or television shows, etc. I just make the choice to not watch movies that offend me. We all have that right.
the fact that 2% of the american male population is imprsoned is rediculous. it's time american citizens stage and armed revolution against their leaders. period.
not convinced? china doesnt even imprison as many people, and their population is higher (what about 1.2 billion chinese, and 2% of them arent in prison?) so something must be wrong. if you're a white american: KILL YOUR STATE GOVERNER OR LEGISLLATOR BY SNIPER RIFLE OR CAR BOMB
This movie is disgusting.
American Me is a really good prison movie. I also liked Bad Boys, which was set in a juvenile detention facility.
This is all very true. good article
