Private Practice Stars Are the Best Celebrities on Twitter

Barb Hickey
It is very easy to feel connected to people in today's high tech world of Blackberries, iPhones and social networking sites such as Twitter. Only the folks at Twitter know for sure, but it is estimated that there are more than 13 million people with Twitter accounts and several thousand of them are famous celebrities. In 2009, for than two billion "tweets" (140 character messages) were posted by Twitter users. Many celebrities such as John Mayer, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Paris Hilton post meaningless tweets about what they ate for lunch, what they bought at the store and what movies they are watching. Other celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Barbara Walters and Ryan Seacrest use Twitter to promote their shows. It is very rare that any of these celebrities take the time to reply to their fans that follow them daily and send tweets hoping for reply that never comes.

However, the four stars of ABC's hit drama Private Practice are unlike most self-centered celebrities. Series stars, Kate Walsh, Audra McDonald, Amy Brenneman and Tim Daly and the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, take time each day to interact with their fans. It is amazing that between the long days and nights on the set, to creating a perfume, to traveling across the country each week, to taking care of young children at home, these superstars take time each day to respond to as many of their followers as possible.

Shonda Rhimes (@shondarhimes) receives thousands of tweets from fans about the characters on Grey's Anatomy and Practice and in the middle of writing to season finales she takes time to respond to many of her followers often posting her replies in her timeline for everyone to read to learn the latest scoops on the shows.

It is a well-known fact that Kate Walsh (k8_walsh) is animal lover and many of her 27,141 followers send her pictures of their dogs and cats and she comments on many of them each day. Kate also wishes her followers happy birthday, sends good luck wishes and wishes them luck on their tests. She even answers personal questions about her natural hair color and what is in her refrigerator. Audra McDonald (@audraequalitymc) travels two to three times each week between New York and Los Angeles and still takes the time to respond to her Twitter followers. Audra also answers the personal questions and often gives career advice to drama students. She even responds to her Italian followers in Italian.

Amy Brenneman (@TheAmyBrenneman), while juggling long days on the set and two young children at home, takes the time to respond to many of her fans seeking advice and shares her personal experiences with them. Tim Daly (@TimmyDaly) sends lighted hearted humorous replies to the many tweets he receives every day, most of them coming from woman.

If you really wanted to feel a connection between the stars of your favorite show, Private Practice, start following @k8_walsh, @AudraEquityMc, @TheAmyBrenneman, @TimmyDaly and @shondarhimes). I guarantee you won't be disappointed and you may be surprised when you get a personal reply from one of these wonderful stars.

This is so true. I really enjoy following all five of them, they balance out promoting events they are part of or they feel strongly for with answering fans and just having fun chatting with each other and the world. My favorite bit so far was when Amy and Audra decided to cast the PrP cast as Snow White's seven dwarfs... lol

I found a link to your article over on Fox News (Entertainment section) in an AC feed. Very interesting and well-written piece. Just a quick note, there is a typo with one of the twitter accounts. It should be @AudraEqualityMc (the 'al' in 'equality' is missing in the article). Congrats on getting picked up in the feed. I hope you get a ton of clicks!
