PRK Eye Surgery: Ten Days After the Surgery and Beyond

The next couple days after the immediate recovery from PRK eye surgery were amazing and fantastic! Having only seen with the aid of glasses since the age of eight, to wake up in the morning and know where I was, what time of day it was and if my fiancé was at home or in the gym was completely and unexpectedly incredible.

I used to shave with what I call the "two-handed method." In other words, I would get my face as close to my legs as possible and then, I would shave with one hand and feel the spot I just went over with the other hand to make sure that I got everything. A somewhat redundant process, but it always gave me pretty decent results. Since the eye surgery, I have purposely used only one hand and have gotten smooth legs that way too!

The only worry that the recovery from PRK eye surgery caused was about a slight astigmatism. I noticed this about seven days after the surgery. I was sitting in a rather boring lecture with a PowerPoint presentation. I was (and am) intensely fascinated with my progress and ability of my eye sight, so I started closing one eye and then the other to see how well I could... see! That's when I noticed that in my left eye I saw double images, especially if I tilted my head.

When I went to the eye surgeon's office on day ten after the eye surgery, he said that with the healing process of PRK eye surgery it is rather normal to experience a temporary astigmatism. This made me highly relieved! He had said before the surgery that I had a very slight astigmatism in my left eye, so I was incredibly worried when a sharply increased astigmatism appeared. The doctor was right (not surprisingly) because in a few days that astigmatism was completely gone as my eyes healed in a normal fashion.

One result of the PRK eye surgery that I noted the other day was that when I read, I can comfortably hold the book farther from my face than before. I used to hold it about 25 to 35 cm from my face but now my eyes get irritated at that distance. Now the book lies in my lap and my eyes feel completely at ease. It is amazing to be normal!

I would recommend that anyone with severe eye sight problems to talk to a respected laser eye surgeon in their area (as it is not recommended to travel to an eye surgeon for a variety of reasons). The days of RK surgery, which had the surgeon cut by hand a spoke-like pattern on the cornea, are over. The computer guided equipment of LASIK and PRK eye surgery provide extraordinarily precise results. PRK eye surgery, like other eye surgeries, is still considered elective surgery, but it does provide the result of being normal! My fiancé, with his natural perfect vision, could not and has not understood the amazing results of my surgery, and sometimes I forget it myself. Again, it is miraculous to be normal; consider it for yourself!
