Pro Football Preview 2007-08 Season: AFC East

Bruce Bostwick
As the 2007-2008 seasons draws closer for the AFC, this year however seems to be no different. The New England Patriots have been the team to beat in the AFC East. The New York Jets have become competitive and just last season finished above .500 while the Bills and Dolphins had rather disappointing seasons to say the least. This season however may become a little more competitive but not a whole lot. New England will still be known as the team to beat despite not going to the Super Bowl. They are still a heavy contender for taking the championship for the 4th time in franchise history.

New England Patriots

Tom Brady is to the New England Patriots as to Troy Aikman was to the Dallas Cowboys, the quarterback who could win big games. They draw similar comparisons based upon the success each have had in the Super Bowl. The team itself is ranked as a top defensive term in terms of points allowed per game coming in at #2 in the AFC Conference. While offense also is strong, the defense is the strong suit and it doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon. Projection at this point would be to look for them to finish 1st place in the AFC East and be a contender in the AFC Title game when they make it.

Projected Finish: 1st

Miami Dolphins

This team was good before but has had a string of bad luck. Recently Joey Harrington is no longer the Quarterback due to no chemistry with the entire team and has moved on to another franchise, the Atlanta Falcons. The season wasn't just the quarterback's fault but the lack of team chemistry was what really hurt this team in the playoff hunt. This season however is going to be tough for them as they continue to rebuild and find out who they are and this season will hopefully the sake of the Dolphins fans will do so. Right now, they will most likely finish in last place but that doesn't mean it will be a real bad team. They could finish .500 and still be in last given the unpredictable nature of the Bills and Jets this upcoming season.

Projected Finish: 4th

New York Jets

How this team was bad has changed that perception has changed last season. They finished 2nd and got a Wild Card spot in the playoffs. They will be a threat to New England and are probably the closest team to pulling that off probably in a while since they've started getting really good. This team is expected to be good and will be a year older and a year more experienced. They will most likely finish 2nd but they will give New England a run due to the team chemistry this team possesses.

Projected Finish: 2nd

Buffalo Bills

The Bills had finished with a 7-9 record, while not a good record, it had been somewhat of an improvement and a step in the right direction. Now if they can capitalize it on that, they could also challenge the Jets. They haven't been to the Super Bowl since 1993 in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys are the only team to have been in 4 consecutive Super Bowls but not win any of them. Could this team form the chemistry it needs to play when the lights are on bright and it really counts? Who knows for sure on that? Offensively is not there strong suit in terms of scoring and defense in terms of keeping games close is a lot stronger. So the strong suit is the defense but as far as playoff experience, this team doesn't have that much yet, could they still make it? They could do so but only time will tell. This is not going to be the year they get into the Playoffs but it will be the year that could dictate where this franchise goes from this point forward.

Projected Finish: 3rd

So in essence, the AFC East does not look different in terms of who will finish where. Based upon last season, it looks pretty set to stay the same but who knows what the final records will be. It won't matter how many yards are given up per game, it will only matter on how many times they win. New England at this moment is still the team to beat despite the Colts going to the Super Bowl and winning it. The Patriots are not looking to slow down anytime soon and could earn the title of team of the 2000s. Coming up next will be the preview of the AFC West.
