Pro Football's Worst: Detroit Lions Have Become a Laughing Stock in the League

Bruce Bostwick
The Lions are going to be entering the next season with very low expectations. The draft wasn't kind to them when they selected Joey Harrington as there Quarterback. This team was probably one of the closest franchises to actually finish a season without actually winning a game but for their luck they did end up winning a few games. The coaching for this team obviously hasn't worked for them. Sometimes good coaching may not be the answer that can solve this teams problem but in this case it has to be. If a team is not motivated by their coach to actually have them give it everything they got, this team will continue to be laughed at. The running joke on this team is that they can't seem to find the goal line. It was on I believe Best Damn Sports Show Period and probably some other talk shows for sure.

There was the season in 2001 where this team finished 2-14; perhaps the worst finish in the last 20 years for this particular franchise that once enjoyed success. They have never won a Super Bowl game in their history nor have they ever even been there. This team in that respect is like the Browns, another team that never went to the big game in the Super Bowl era. Since 2001, this team has mostly seen themselves in a downward spiral, not making the playoffs each of those seasons. 2007-2008 is coming up and this team is so far not expected to make the playoffs or even contend for it yet again. The coach for this team is currently Rod Marinelli, who is actually looking to do what his predecessors haven't done as of late and that is have a winning season. He has been the coach for 2 seasons and by now should be pretty well adjusted to the players and helps mold this team together.

It seems that there is also another issue with the President/CEO of the organization with Matt Millen. He has been probably been one of Detroit's most hated President in history. He has yet to help get this team turned around and just doesn't seem to care no matter what. If the fans don't like him, the team still keeps him around no matter what. He had a team that wasn't doing bad but somehow has made it one of the single biggest disappointments during his tenure. He has lost a total of 72 games but only winning 24. With a record like that, one would have assumed that he would lose his job and the team would have to find a new President/CEO but that's not the case with the Lions. It is believed that this team either doesn't care or simply really has a lot of faith with him.

It doesn't matter who is drafted to this team because they can be a pick no one would think would go far in his career but could turn around and do good. One player isn't going to turn this team around. It takes an overall change in management all the way around for this team to even bother doing anything. They won't relocate anytime soon. The fan base has no hope and still thinks that Millen should be fired no matter what and doesn't care how it is done. In fact, some Lions fans probably believe he is the reason for this team not having any form of success. It will be better that this team realizes soon enough or they will continue to be a joke.

That's what I was thinking. My mistake on that for not being clear. Thanks for responding though.

I'm confused. "The draft wasn't kind to them when they selected Joey Harrington as there Quarterback." They actually had a good draft this year headlines by Calvin Johnson. Harrington was selected years ago and is no longer with the team. The Lions should be better this season in the NFC North. The problem with the Lions is solely Millen. Now that they seem to have a good enough coach they could turn things around soon.
