Problem Causing Skype Extension for Firefox is Blocked by Mozilla

The Skype Extension is Most Common Cause of Firefox Crashes

Tony Payne
If like me you use the Mozilla Firefox web browser, and you have been extremely frustrated with it running slow, locking up and also crashing, maybe it's not Firefox itself that has been causing the problem, but an extension for Firefox that is automatically applied when you install Skype onto your computer.

When you install Skype, which is one of the most popular communications programs these days, allowing you to make free phone calls and video calls from pc to pc using a webcam, it automatically installs the Skype Toolbar into the Firefox browser, and it is this extension that is the cause of many of the crashes in Firefox.

According to Mozilla, this Skype extension has been responsible for no less than 40,000 browser crashes a week, as well as significantly increasing the time that it takes to load pages.

According to a report from CNET, Mozilla have been talking with the technical people at Skype, and they are reportedly working on fixing the problem.

If you use Firefox and Skype and are not sure whether you have the Skype Toolbar extension installed, check to see if any phone numbers on a web page are highlighted and show a Skype logo so that they can be clicked on and called automatically. If you see these, then you do have this extension installed.

In the meantime, until Skype manage to fix the extension, Mozilla have barred it, so that it will not affect Firefox users unnecessarily.

Should you use both Skype and Firefox and wish to continue using this extension, the block is only a soft one, and you can re-enable it if you choose by going to the Firefox extension options.

For those of us who have been frustrated by problems in Firefox for the last several years, it looks as if Mozilla are finally sorting these out, and hopefully we should now begin to see Firefox performing smoothly once more.

Unfortunately for Mozilla though, the constant problems that many users of Firefox have had over the last couple of years, has caused them to switch to other browsers, most notably the lightweight and fast Chrome browser from Google.

The AC Captcha is painful to use isn't it. So many are easy to read, but this one is next to impossible.

I just installed Skype a month ago and have had problems with mozzilla crashing. McAfee came up with a message the other day suggesting I uninstall Skype as it was unstable. Wish they would do something about the Yahoo!AC captcha too. Painful to use. Cheers.
