One of the main problems is that your computer may be running the bare minimum RAM. You did not notice this at first but as you have used it over time it has loaded and functioned slower than it used to. The computer when first taken out of the box is running at its peak performance than over time it slows down as we add programs and use it on a daily basis. If this is your problem than you may need a RAM upgrade.
Another reason is what we allow Windows to load when starting up. To check this you can click start/run and type msconfig. This will bring up a window. Click on services and you will see the list of applications and services your computer is running when it starts up. What your looking for is any third party applications that are running when Windows boots up. You should not allow any applications to boot up with Windows other than a anti-virus and anti-spyware program. If you have any messengers running click to hide or remove. Last thing you ever want to do is to let applications control your computer when you should have control. Any stay resident programs allowed to boot up with windows is robbing your computer from RAM and resources it could be using elsewhere.
After you have checked this and removed any third party applications your next step would be to run a disk cleanup. This will examine your computer for old files and data thats hanging around and clogging your system. You can also download Ccleaner and run it. It will remove everything that shouldn't be there. It will also remove old dll files and old registry entries that can be removed.
After you have performed this maintenance function your next step would be to defrag your computer. If you have not done this in a long time than go to something else while this is running cause it will take several hours for it to complete. I have known some defrags to take all night to complete. After this is done you should notice a boost in performance.
If after running these maintenance steps and your system still boots slow than I would recommend backing stuff up and doing a fresh install. It may be the last resort but it fixes so many problems that can occur.
Slow boots doesn't always mean you need a new computer it just may need some maintenance or fresh install to solve any slow boot up issues.

Post a CommentThis is why I have a Mac :-) Great info for everyone who needs it :-)
Ccleaner is great! I installed it a while back and it found stuff on my computer that had been removed a long time ago lingering around. I'm going to go try the msconfig thing right now. Thanks for the tips!
