Under long-term stress, the body realizes that it is no longer able to sacrifice itself for short-term energy. In response, the body deposits a layer of belly fat to be utilized for energy production; the body can effectively convert fat into usable sugars and easily replace the fat without compromising valuable nutrients, cells, and tissues.
Cortisol also acts as a sleep-cycle regulator. It spikes in the morning to awaken an individual and gradually decreases over the course of the day. Regular functioning cortisol levels allow one to awaken in the morning feeling rested and energized and to feel tired an night so that they are "out like a lamp" in the evening. One has experienced the "spike" of cortisol levels when they have set an alarm clock for the same time for a few days in a row. The following day, deciding that they want to sleep in, awaken at the same time due to a "spike" of cortisol levels at the same time of the previous days.
Balanced cortisol levels are vital to a healthy functioning body. Indications of high cortisol levels include:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Difficulty staying asleep
- Difficulty waking up
- Never feel well rested
- Ligament laxity (loose joints)
- Difficulty losing weight
- Multiple failed diets where weight-loss was nearly impossible
- Fatigue / Tired
- Sugar cravings
- Elevated cholesterol levels
- Hormonal imbalances (from Pregnenolone Steal)
- Tenderness on web of finger between 4th and 5th digit
