Product Development for Websites
Product development is something that most people assume is only for websites or companies that sell something. The truth is that all websites are trying to sell something. Some are trying to sell merchandise or services, while others are trying to sell information. If you have an informational website then the products that you develop will focus on information and tools that your visitors are going to want and need. If you have a commercial website then your products are going to focus on what you want to sell, as well as on free items that will attract more people to your site.
Information Website Product Development
The foundation of an information website is "information." To be successful your site needs to continuously develop new information pages and applications. This will keep your site relevant and current. If you are looking for ways to keep your clients coming back to your site week after week then you need to offer them more than just text products.
Expanding what "products" your website offers to include entertaining or useful tools and applications is a great option. Many of these widgets can be found online and uploaded to your site free of charge. Widgets are basically just web-based gadgets that do something. For example, you can add a day planner widget to your site, a calendar application or a timer widget to your website. These widgets can be used by site visitors through your website or they can download it from your site. The point here is to offer your visitors the things that they are most likely to be interested in. This means that if you host an investment information website that you offer your visitors investment related widgets like stock tickers and financial planners.
Commercial Website Product Development
If you have a commercial website then your primary products are going to be what you normally sell. For example, if you are a book store then your products will be books. However, while your inventory may be somewhat set you always need to be on the look out for the next big seller in your industry. This may mean that you actively look for emerging authors to promote on your site or that you look for products that your customers will be interested in.
In addition to product selection commercial website product development also needs to focus on information and useful web applications that customers will be interested in or that they will need in order to place an order on your site. For example, if you sell automotive supplies you can publish information pages about common problems and their solutions. These landing pages can then link to product pages. The key here is to provide your customers with everything that they need to make an informed purchase decision.
