Product of Focus: Kraft Macaroni & Cheese

Shopping Savvy

Allana Calhoun
Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (Original Flavor) is a popular product because it is easy to make, tastes great and most kids love it. The other factor is that it is usually pretty cheap too. An individual package of the regular size can cost anywhere from 75 cents to $1.29. Bulk packages can be 5-packs, 12-packs, and some places even offer 24-packs.

Since 12-packs and larger tend to be available more in Club or Membership stores, I will skip those in this article.

The Math

1 package (7.25 oz) at $0.88 = $0.121 per ounce
5-pack (36.25 oz) at $3.50 = $0.097 per ounce

OR

1 package (7.25 oz) at $0.75 = $0.104 per ounce

Conclusion
A 5-pack is a better deal when buying multiple packages. If you have a family that likes Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, this is the route to go. Even if the 5-pack costs up to $4, it is still a better deal than buying 5 individual packages at 75 cents each.

Other Things to Take Note of:

Family Size Packages
Family Size packages are something you have to figure out at the time you shop. It used to be that Family Size packages (14.5 oz) were not always a better deal than buying 2 regular size packages. This is because you could often get the 7.25 oz packages for around 50 cents. At current prices, Family Size packages are a better deal, but don't just assume. Be sure to divide the price of by the ounces to compare the two sizes. Remember that a Family Size package equals 2 regular size packages so when comparing you need to keep that in mind.

Special Shapes and Flavors
Be careful with special shapes such as Spirals, Spongebob and etc. because they are going to give you less ounces for your money. Unless they happen to be on sale (do the math!) enough to make it a good deal, it is best to avoid the special shapes.

Special flavors can be the same way as special shapes so be sure to Do the Math.
