Product Recall: Starbucks Coffee Mugs -- Handle Can Break

Patty Oh
Be on alert, all Starbucks Coffee fans! In a recent press release, it was announced that a popular version of the Starbucks Coffee Mugs have been recalled. The problem? The handle can suddenly break off - sending hot coffee streaming into your lap.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recently announced this voluntary recall. All totaled, nearly 170,000 of these coffee mugs were sold by various Starbucks Coffee locations throughout the United States.

These particular coffee mugs, which were named the Starbucks Fusion Coffee Mug, are made of plastic. The handle is also plastic. These mugs were manufactured by lab921, Seattle, Washington, and had been manufactured in China.

Get a free drink by returning it to a local store
If you return the recalled mug to a local Starbucks store, you'll be rewarded with a free drink. Otherwise you can contact Starbucks directly for more information about returning this mug and getting a refund.

Risk of injury
Starbucks Coffee has already been notified of the handles breaking off, and hot coffee streaming into the laps, of over 23 different consumers. All totaled, nine of the consumers were injured when the handle on their coffee mug broke. If you have one of these mugs, please stop using it immediately.

How to identify the mugs
These mugs were named the Starbucks Fusion Coffee Mug.

These coffee mugs came in two different, but similar, styles. Both styles were made of white plastic and had a black handle. The bottoms of both mugs were made of stainless steel.

The difference? The designs that were used on the mugs. One style had the name, "Starbucks Coffee," imprinted in black, while the other had the Starbucks Coffee logo imprinted in brown.

Other than these differences, the mugs were identical.

Size, price, and locations where these mugs were sold
Approximately 100,000 of these mugs that held 14 ounces, were sold. Their cost? Approximately $11. The mugs with the Starbucks logo were sold throughout the United States in 2007, between February through November.

The mug that had the original Starbucks Coffee lettering design was only sold at their Pikes Place retail store, which is located in Seattle, Washington.

What to do if you own the Fusion coffee mug
If you own either of these mugs, please stop using it immediately since there is the risk of being burned if the handle breaks while you have a hot liquid in the mug.

I have the tall stainless steel with plastic on the outside tumbler and the handle broke off spilling hot liquad on me. I tried to get a replacement at local Cooper City store and they did not seem to care. Be careful.

Thanks for the warning. Products seem to get cheaper and cheaper in quality. I'm not surprised.
