Product Review- 1999 GMC Jimmy

K Jolin
On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate my 1999 GMC Jimmy at about a 7. There are many positives about the vehicle, but several negatives as well. It is one of the smallest SUV's manufactured by any car company. The GMC Jimmy and the Chevy Blazer are basically the same model, just different names. It is a very popular vehicle throughout the Midwest.

We first bought our 1999 GMC Jimmy because we wanted a family friendly vehicle that was 4 wheel drive and could tow well. We had a 1999 Chevy Silverado, and loved that truck. We had an infant, so we needed a bit more space and also wanted a more fuel efficient vehicle. What we got was a smaller vehicle that had more doors, but not necessarily more space. The cabin of the Jimmy is very small. There is ample room in the front two bucket seats, and the leg room is decent. What I was really disappointed in was the back seat. The seat is very narrow and you can only fit 2 car seats in the back. Even if you had no car seats, sitting 3 people in the back row would be very uncomfortable. While this may not matter to some people, anyone with a growing family treasures space in the back seat! Kids need their room to play and keep all their toys and snacks handy! The cargo space in the rear is also fairly disappointing. You cannot fit much back there. After putting suitcases and bedding in the back, the cargo space is nearly full. Since you are not supposed to stack items too high, your actual capacity is greatly diminished. There is a cover you can pull over the area, but it falls off often.

The Jimmy does tow well, you don't feel the pull on the vehicle too bad. The gas mileage is decent at about 20 miles per gallon. The control panel is very simple and easy to read. We LOVE the push-button four-wheel drive option! It works great. The car also has an automatic 4 wheel drive option, in which the car will automatically engage the 4 wheel drive in slippery conditions. The anti-lock breaks also work excellent and the Jimmy has proven to be excellent in snow. We have driven through 3 feet tall drifts with ease! The center of gravity is low for an SUV, so that makes the ride feel smooth.

I do like the safety I feel when driving the GMC Jimmy. Vision is excellent with large side mirrors and windows. I think the positives outweigh the negatives and am pleased with the performance of my 1999 GMC Jimmy. I also love the deep blue color that GMC produces for it's vehicles!

  • Automatic 4 wheel drive is the best option!
  • The back seat is too small for a family vehicle.
  • The front seats are extremely comfortable and roomy!
The GMC Jimmy and the Chevy Blazer are basically the same model.
