Product Review: 3M Command Nickel Hook

The 3M Command Hook is a Handy Hanger

Susan Antonelli
With Christmas going on there were so many things to hang when decorating I was thrilled to find the 3M Command all season nickel finish medium brushed hook. I was just shopping in general in Target and stopped dead in my tracks when I spotted this super little hook. It was in the reduced after Christmas are so it was also a terrific price. It was 75% off of $6.29.

I knew this would be perfect for hanging wreaths outside and in. I also thought it would work well for hanging stockings since we don't have a mantle in our home. At $6.29 for one hook, I wasn't going to buy it but at 75% off I was searching for more.

This is a very attractive hook. It's simple, nice looking and a good size. I read in the information on the package that it can hold 1 kg or 3 pounds. That's quite a lot for a hook. It measures a tad over 4 inches with the hook itself being about 2 inches. It is brushed nickel and a bit contemporary looking so if that's not your look that's a consideration. Most of the hook would be hidden if you use it to hang a wreath so it would still work with more traditional decor. . I would love to see it in different styles, perhaps something more ornate. The hooks do come in a dark green which works well with Christmas wreaths and in white plastic. I prefer the metal. They come in different sizes and weight capability, the largest I saw was able to hold 7 1/2 lbs. This is called the jumbo.

You get a hook and medium water resistant strips in your package. On the package it tells you it hangs on a wall strongly, comes off cleanly and does no surface damage. These are very important facts. For people who live in apartments as renters you do not want to do damage to anything. For students this is a real positive for a dormitory. Even if you own your own home it's better to do no damage when hanging hooks then have to repair walls when you take your Christmas decorations down. The package does say for seasonal use only so I guess you cannot leave it up for long amounts of time.

In order to put the hook up you have to clean the surface your applying the hook to with alcohol. Wipe the area lightly and allow the area to dry. You are warned not to use ordinary household cleaners to prepare the area. You then separate your strips. You remove the red liner and apply the strips according to the picture in the directions. You then remove the black liner, mount the hook and press the entire hook firmly for 30 seconds. Then you wait for one hour. Now you're ready to hang your item. It's really quite simple.

Be sure to save your instructions for when you want to take the hook down since there is a specific way to do this.

To remove the hook you slide the hook cover up to reveal the base and removal tab. Hold the base as shown on the picture on the package back. Do not press the base against the wall. Grab the tab without pulling the strip out at an angle or the strip could break damaging the wall. SLOWLY (this is emphasized in capitals on the package) slide the tab straight down against the wall stretching the strip at least 12 inches until the base releases from the wall. You can reuse these hooks if you purchase more adhesive strips. I thought that was a real plus.

Using this hook may sound a bit complicated but it was really easy. I was able to hang the hook easily, keep it up for several weeks and remove it without a trace.

A warning on the package tells you not to use it in extremely warm conditions as the tape can soften. It is not recommended for hanging pictures. 3M makes other products for pictures. They also say on the package this is not for hanging heirlooms or antiques. Do not this on wallpaper.

So, in my opinion this is a very useful product but just not at $6.29.I f you can find it at the after Christmas sales stock up.
