Product Review: Aiptek ActionHD GVS 1080p High Definition Camcorder

Blair Mathis
Aiptek swept into the camcorder market by offering the ultra-cheap A-HD high definition dual-camera. Though it was played with a bad microphone, poor low-light quality, and average video quality, the device sold rapidly and set the groundwork for a market full of low-cost compact HD camcorders.

Having come a long way from the days of the A-HD, Aiptek is now offering the latest generation of their ActionHD line, the Aiptek ActionHD GVS high-definition pocket camcorder. With a suggested retail price of $180, the ActionHD GVS is a low-cost option with excellent features.

Features

The first thing you'll notice upon picking up the Aiptek ActionHD GVS is its small size and light weight. With a size of 4.5" x 3.5" x 1.75", you can easily fit the GVS inside of a jean pocket or purse; the weight of 6.8 ounces makes it only slightly heavier than an average wallet or cell phone.

The video quality is comparable to the quality of more expensive pocket HD camcorders on the market, and is excellent in daylight, while average for digital footage in dim/low lighting. The recording resolution is 1080p and can record up to 60 frames-per-second. Still images can be taken at 5 megapixels (2592x1944), which is large enough for most average sized prints.

High-definition playback is possible with included component cables, though it won't be as high-quality as an HDMI cable would provide. There is also a composite cable included for standard-definition televisions.

Image Quality

Still images are average, and adequate for recording fun events and cute moments. It is not, however, a good camera for high-quality photography.

The video quality is surprising for a camera of this price and size. Day-time shots in bright light is sharp with good colors and contrast. There isn't any vignette or blurring around the edges. Videos in dim and low light is average and has a yellow tint to it. It is sufficient for average users, but isn't acceptable if you're looking to make a short film or art project.

ConclusionThis camera is an excellent choice for individuals who need a lightweight camera to take on vacation, to record life's little moments, or use for a school project. The price is low compared to other cameras on the markets, and that makes it a good overall choice.
