Product Review: Auntie Anne's Take Home Pretzel Kit

Alison Myers
Have you ever been out to eat and love your food so much that you wish you could make it home? Well, if you love Auntie Anne's soft pretzels, you can now do that with the Auntie Anne's Take Home Pretzel Kit.

The kit costs $12.95 and can be purchased at a local Auntie Anne's stand. You can make ten of either the original or cinnamon sugar pretzels. It comes with all the ingredients used to make the famous pretzels: yeast, salt, and a cinnamon topping. This kit is perfect for kids' parties, church events, school parties, or just for baking with your whole family. They are also good for a group fundraiser.

Once you get the kit, there will be instructions inside to help you make the pretzels. All you need is a baking pan, non stick spray, and vegetable oil. First, you have to put the yeast in a bowl with vegetable oil and let it sit for 45 minutes. Once it has sat, you can measure it into pieces of 1 ½ by 8 inches and begin rolling it into the pretzel shape. If you need extra help, there is a diagram of how the pretzel is supposed to look to guide your shaping.

This part was a little complicated but with a lot of practice, my mom, brother, and I managed to get the hang of it. You have to roll the dough out so it's flat and long, then make a U shape, and then start crossing the two ends to make a pretzel. Although they advertise ten pretzels, we only managed to make eight. We only managed the famous Auntie Anne's image on one or two of our pretzels, and then the rest were normal size.

After that, it was time to bake the pretzels. They have to bake for 5 minutes at first, and then you have to put the salt and, if you're using it, the cinnamon topping on. Once they are done you can pull them out of the oven and enjoy. They will be a little hot at first so make sure to handle them with oven mitts. You will be happy with how they taste almost exactly like what you can get at the Auntie Anne's near you.

The kit was a Christmas present I purchased for my brother, but you can use it any time. Although it takes time and practice to prepare the pretzels before putting them in the oven, it is worth working towards for a great end result. The famous recipe cannot be topped. This is a great way to have a good time with your family and share a favorite snack.

The only thing I was disappointed about was that we couldn't make the ten pretzels the kit advertises. I'm not sure if this is a common case, but maybe if you shape your pretzels smaller and dough longer, you could get ten. If you can't make ten though, the packaging needs to be more honest.

If you don't have a local Auntie Anne's, you can purchase the kit online at http://www.shopauntieannes.com. You can even pick which quotation you want on the box:
