Product Review of Ayr Saline Nasal Mist

Julie James
I used to have to go to the doctor at least once a year for bronchitis that had started as a case of the sniffles, which advanced to a cold, which made it's way down into my lungs. At each of these visits, my trusted physician would tell me to go the drugstore and purchase a bottle of Ayr Saline Nasal Mist to help alleviate the discomfort I'd inevitably feel in my nasal passages.

You can find Ayr Saline Nasal Mist in both spray and gel form. Although I've tried both, I do prefer the spray. Note: this is not a medicated product. You can safely use this product as many times as needed to moisturize your nasal passages and soothe inflamed mucuous membranes.

So, what's in this stuff?? According to the back of the bottle, this product consists of "An isotonic solution of sodium chloride 0.65% in deionized water, monobasic potassium phosphate/sodium hydroxide buffer, preserved with disodium EDTA and benzalkonium chloride."

To use, I unscrew the cap, point the tip toward my nostril (without touching the applicator to my nose) and give two quick squeezes. I do not tip my head back as it's not needed. I then repeat on the other side. The product comes out in a very fine mist, and isn't messy in any way. I can immediately feel the relief as the saline solution coats the tender, inflamed tissue.

If I use this product when I've feeling pretty stuffed up, it generally works to open my nasal passages well enough for me to be able to breathe through my nose. Many times when we feel stuffed up, it's actually swelling we have from inflamed tissue.

In order to maintain the integrity of the product, it is extremely important not to place the applicator inside your nostril. You run the danger of aspirating nasal contents into the bottle, and you also are placing germs on the applicator. Should you accidentally touch the tip of the bottle to your nose, rinse it in very hot water.

While I have never had to use this product on a child, I would think the gel would be much easier to apply. To use the gel, you place some of the product on a cotton swab and gently apply just inside the nasal passage.

Even though this isn't a medicated product, it is still important to keep this out of reach of children.

I highly recommend Ayr Saline Nasal Mist. I now use it all throughout the winter months when I'm subjected to the dry heat put out by our furnace. My nasal passages are much more comfortable, and I find myself with far fewer cases of the dreaded sniffles.
