Product Review: Baked Nacho Cheese Doritos

Doritos rank high on my eleven year old son's list of all-time favorite foods. He loves them so much that I can even use them as a reward for good behavior. So I'm definitely glad that there are Baked! Nacho Cheese Doritos. Though my son is very slender, I still worry and think a lot about his overall health. I like to indulge him now and then, but I insist on feeding him the healthiest diet possible.

At $3.00 for a 12 ounce package, Baked! Nacho Cheese Doritos were a little bit more expensive than the regular variety Doritos tortilla chips. They were considerably less expensive than the Whole Foods' Organic Barbecue Flavor Potato Chips which we sampled some time before. Those chips had been $2.29 for a measly 5 ounces of chips, and weren't lower in fat or calories than ordinary chips. They also were a little less expensive than Lay's Baked! Cheddar and Sour Cream Flavored Potato Chips, because the bag contained two and a half ounces more chips.

Baked! Nacho Cheese Doritos scored well in the nutrition area. They had 120 calories for a one ounce serving of chips, with a total of 3.5 grams of fat. They had half a gram of saturated fat, 2 grams of polyunsaturated fat and one gram of monounsaturated fat. The sodium was 220 mg per one ounce serving, and the chips had 2 grams of dietary fiber, and 2 grams of protein. These chips had considerably lower sodium than regular chips. I don't believe it's low enough for someone who is trying to reduce their sodium intake due to a health problem like high blood pressure. However, for healthy people, it's probably okay when taken in moderation.

Baked! Nacho Cheese Doritos were a little more crumbly and prone to breaking than regular Doritos. This was only an issue when we were trying to put the tortilla chips in dip. Since my son doesn't like to dip, it wasn't an issue.

In some ways the chips were a little too good. My son likes to run off with the bag with the intent of eating the entire thing at a sitting. I have to intervene to keep him from doing this. So I keep the chips out of his reach, and don't buy them very often. However, as a special treat I think these chips are great. I simply would never use them as a staple.

Overall, I think that Baked! Nacho Cheese Doritos are an excellent product, and part of a healthy diet when used in moderation.
